Spiral hams are delicious, but they yield so much meat. When you're craving ham, but don't want to fuss with a full roast like that, ham steaks are the way to go! Sautéed with some kale and sweet maple sauce, this ham steak is quick and gets a crispy exterior. This is also great for a holiday celebration with only a handful of people. Instead of roasting and glazing a whole ham, just make everyone their own perfectly cooked, savory-sweet steak.
How do you cook a ham steak?
Many brands of prepackaged ham steaks are sold smoked and fully cooked, but reheating to at least 140° before serving is recommended by the USDA. You can pan-fry ham steaks in a skillet with a little bit of oil, grill them, or bake them.
What kind of glaze works?
A glaze is essential with a ham steak. However you normally like to flavor a whole baked ham (aka your favorite ham glaze) will also work with a ham steak. Our favorite glaze is a mix of maple syrup, Dijon, and apple cider vinegar. We always reach for maple syrup, which brings out the sweetness of ham. Apple cider vinegar brings a nice brightness and cuts the fattiness of the ham, while Dijon brings a tangy kick.
What goes well with ham steak?
We like to serve ham steak with a bean, like black eyed peas, or cannellini beans, and a leafy green quickly sautéed in olive oil.
They are also great in Ham and Bean Soup and Ham and Cheese Quiche.
How long will ham steak leftovers last in the fridge?
Store properly in an airtight container in the fridge, ham steak leftovers will last between 7 to 10 days.
