When Great Trees Fall Original English Poem By Maya Angelou Hindi Translation By Rajnish Manga बड़े वृक्ष जब गिरते हैं माया आंजेलू हिंदी रूपांतरण रजनीश मंगा द्वारा बड़े वृक्ष जब गिरते हैं तो दूर दूर की पहाड़ियों पर चट्टानें थर्राती हैं, तो सिंह स्वयं भी जंगल की ऊँची घास में छुप जाते हैं, और ऐसे में हाथी तक भी असुरक्षा से घिर कर जैसे चौकन्ने हो जाते हैं. बड़े वृक्ष जब गिरते हैं तो जंगलात में, छोटे छोटे प्राणी तक भी ठिठक के चुप हो जाते है, उनकी सारी संज्ञायें भय से जड़वत हो जाती हैं. जब महापुरुष दिवंगत होते हैं, तो आसपास की वायु जैसे हो जाती है भारहीन, विरल, स्वच्छ, शुद्ध. श्वांस हमारी, भारी भारी. आँख हमारी, भारी भारी देख रही हैं विचलित हो कर. स्मृति हमारी, सहसा ही कुछ तेज हो गयी, जाँच करने लगती है, दांत पीसना उन कोमल शब्दों पर जो रहे अनकहे, सोचा था कि सैर करेंगे नहीं हो सका कभी ये संभव. महापुरुष दिवंगत होते हैं तो यकीं हमारा, जो बंधा था उनसे, हमें छोड़ कर चला गया. हमारी रूहें, टिकी थीं उनकी ही परवरिश पर, सिकुड़ रही हैं, अब झुर्रियों में. हमारी सोचें, महानता में उनकी ही जो परवान चढ़ी, वो बौरा गयी सी लगती हैं. हम इस कदर भी पागल नहीं हुये कि खो जायेंगे अज्ञानता की अकथनीय अँधेरी, ठंड भरी गुफाओं में. और जब महापुरुष दिवंगत होते हैं, काफी समय बाद माहौल सामान्य होता है, धीरे धीरे मगर अनियमित सा. खालीपन पाटे जाते हैं एक प्रकार के सुखदायक विद्युत् कंपन से हमारी संज्ञायें, लौट आने पर, पहले जैसी नहीं रह गयीं, कानों में कह जाती हैं. वो यहीं रहे थे, यहीं रहे थे. हम भी वैसे हो सकते हैं, बन सकते हैं और भी बेहतर. क्योंकि वो भी यहीं रहे थे.

Very nice translation. Reminded me of Rajiv Gandhi's callous remark following November 1984 Sikhs' massacre after his Mom Indira Gandhi's assassination, Jab koi bada ped girta he toh dharti hilti he. Certain areas, I feel, need further polishing. Like this sentence, महापुरुष दिवंगत होते हैं तो यकीं हमारा, जो बंधा था उनसे, हमें छोड़ कर चला गया. Shouldn't it be, chod kar chala jata he?
