Join Aloy as she braves the Forbidden West – a majestic but dangerous frontier that conceals mysterious new threats.

Meet the characters of Horizon Forbidden West

Aloy

Aloy is the greatest machine hunter in the world of Horizon. Strong, independent, clever and compassionate, she started off as a motherless outcast and rose up to be a champion for all humankind. Along with all that, she’s got a powerful drive to unravel the mysteries of the Forbidden West, stop the blight, and save the planet.

Sylens

Little is truly known about Sylens. A wandering scholar, sage and warrior, his past is a series of whispers, misdirections, and enigmas – all of which he encourages. As long as he can stay unseen in the shadows, he can freely pursue his obsession: learning everything he can about the origins of man and machine.

Erend

Erend is one of Aloy’s loyal companions. He is the Captain of the Vanguard, an elite group of warriors from the Oseram tribe. He can be courageous, humorous, and at times, self-effacing. But beneath that burly exterior is a good heart and a vulnerable soul that Aloy wants to protect.

Varl

A warrior from the Nora tribe, Varl is one of Aloy’s returning companions in Horizon Forbidden West. Based on the events from the end of Horizon Zero Dawn, he, like many in the tribe, sees Aloy as the Anointed, a religious figure from the Nora’s beliefs who he is duty-bound to help. But more than that, he is kind and caring, and worries about Aloy as a person and the weight of the burden she carries.

Regalla

Fearless and unrelenting, Regalla is the leader of a rebel faction of Tenakth warriors. Somehow, her forces have gained the ability to tame and ride machines, making her a threat to every tribe in the Forbidden West, and beyond.

Kotallo

Raised by the Tenakth Sky Clan, Kotallo is a stoic and imposing warrior. As a young soldier, he became a Marshal – a roving lawgiver who enforces the peace that the tribe's leader, Hekarro, has established.

Zo

Zo hails from the agrarian tribe of the Utaru. She has devoted herself to providing care and comfort to her people as a Gravesinger – one who helps the ailing make a peaceful transition into death.

Alva

Alva is a member of a mysterious new tribe that Aloy encounters in the Forbidden West. Curious and brilliant but unsure of herself, her job is to help her people interpret the ancient past.

Tilda

Tilda is a mysterious woman with a special connection to the ancient past. Everything about her is wrapped in riddles and secrets, and it will take all of Aloy’s cunning and intelligence to unravel them.

GAIA

GAIA is the central governing intelligence of the Zero Dawn terraforming system, responsible for bringing life back to a barren Earth after its destruction a thousand years ago. As told in Horizon Zero Dawn, she sacrificed herself to stop HADES and, in the process, ordered the creation of Aloy. She’ll be making a return in Horizon Forbidden West to help Aloy stop the blight and save humankind.

Clamberjaw

Fierce, fast and agile, the Clamberjaw uses its claws and tail to salvage scrap. It clings to walls with ease and possesses a range of abilities that debilitate opponents.

Tremortusk

Part combat-class machine, part lumbering fortress, the formidable Tremortusk charges into battle with nigh-indestructible armour and an array of hidden weapons.

Shellsnapper

The amphibious Shellsnapper can dig itself in and lie dormant for days or even weeks, allowing its impenetrable shell to become covered by the surrounding foliage.

Sunwing

Sunwings use their photovoltaic wings to store energy. On bright days, they can be seen hovering high in the air to catch as much sun as possible.

Burrower

The Burrower is a recon machine that emits a high-pitched sound to alert allies and stun enemies. It can tunnel underground and resurface in unexpected locations.

Clawstrider

The Clawstrider is a fast and agile combat machine and can be mounted to cross the Forbidden West at top speed.

Slitherfang

An enormous, fast combat machine that can lash out from long range. Once it assumes a coiled stance, it has access to its full arsenal as its rotating body parts snap into place.

Bristleback

Despite being herd-based acquisition machines, Bristlebacks can become highly aggressive when threatened, using their tusks to great effect.

Explore the world

It’s easy to get wrapped up in Aloy’s story and find yourself racing towards the next quest marker. Take time between key events to explore the world around you. Follow your curiosity even if that means scaling a mountain or diving into a sunken ruin. If you’re looking to get a better vantage point, keep an ear open for the boom of wandering Tallnecks – scale these mighty machines and you’ll be able to harness their powerful radar censors to uncover additional information about the surrounding area.

Not only will you discover great new locations, interesting side stories and new characters, but you’ll also discover Hunting Grounds to hone your skills, and local rumour merchants with secrets and wisdom to impart.

Know your enemy

That nifty device Aloy wears isn’t just a fetching adornment. With a quick tap your Focus will highlight useful resources and points of interest to explore, plus it’s also key to understanding the many adversaries that stand between you and your goals.  Take some time to properly scan the machines and enemies of the Forbidden West; doing so will reveal vast amounts of information You can even tag key parts to help you aim during battle and can even help you upgrade your equipment or fulfil a merchant request! Horizon Forbidden West’s combat is built as much around strategy as it is skill. Being able to anticipate your enemy’s movements, exploit their weakness and use their own weapons and abilities against them can rapidly turn the tide of battle in your favour.

Meet the locals

It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. The Forbidden West is teeming with potential allies who’ll be willing to do you a good turn if you do them one in return. Engage with locals in towns and cities you visit and find out what they have offer; help those in need or just shoot the breeze to learn more about the local area. You can also try your luck with the popular board game Machine Strike or hone your combat skills in the many Melee Pits around the world.

Prepare for war

Preparation is key. Search for cooks in local settlements who’ll help you prepare tasty meals that provide buffs to your stats, giving the edge against large machines.  There are dozens of weapons to acquire across the Forbidden West, including Spears, Bows, Slings, Shredder Gauntlets, Spike Throwers and more. Each of these has rare and legendary variants to collect and multiple ammo types to craft. Collecting, modifying, and mastering them will not only make you stronger, but may also grant access to new areas. Offense is only half the battle though: to really thrive, you’ll need a strong defence. Hunt down different armour sets across the world, and recolour and modify them to ensure that no matter what you’re up against, you’re always dressed to kill.

 

Pick your style

As you progress through the Forbidden West, you’ll be able to unlock new abilities on Aloy’s skill tree. There are six different areas that Aloy can specialize in and you’ll need to focus on which best suits your playstyle.  Invest in Warrior skills to unlock more options in face-to-face combat, in Hunter skills to improve your finesse with weapons and traps, and Infiltration to strengthen your ability in stealth and surprise attacks.
