How Do I Set Up A Guest VLAN On My Insight Managed Smart Cloud ...

Guest VLANS allow you to isolate some ports on your Insight Managed Smart Cloud Switch from the rest of the ports. This allows you to provide your guests Internet access without compromising the security of your network.

If you want to set up a different type of VLAN, see one of the following knowledge base articles:

  • How do I set up a VOIP VLAN in the Insight app for my Insight Managed Switch?
  • How do I set up an Auto-Video VLAN in the Insight app for my Insight Managed Switch?
  • How do I set up a custom VLAN in the Insight app for my Insight Managed Switch?

If you are not familiar with VLANs, visit the following knowledge base article before you begin: What do I need to know about setting up VLANs?.

Before you can follow this procedure, you must add your Insight Managed Smart Cloud Switch in Insight and set it up. For more information, see How do I set up an Insight Managed Switch in the Insight app?.

By default, all ports are members of VLAN 1 (the default VLAN), so all you need to do is create another VLAN (VLAN 2) for guests, then add ports to it.

The following steps explain how to set up a guest VLAN on a GC510PP 8-port PoE+ Insight Managed Smart Cloud Switch, but they apply to all Insight Managed Smart Cloud switches. When you are done with these steps, devices in VLAN 1 and in VLAN 2 can access the Internet, but cannot see each other.

In this example setup, the port VLAN memberships are as follows:

  • Port 1: Uplink (connection to the Internet)—must be a member of all VLANs
  • Ports 2-8: VLAN 1 (default)
  • Ports 5-8: VLAN 2 (guest)

The uplink port that is connected to your router (port 1) must be a member of all VLANs that need to be able to reach the Internet.

In this example, all ports are untagged members of one or more VLANs. We use port VLAN IDs (PVIDs) to keep the two VLANs separate. A port’s PVID is the VLAN ID of the VLAN that will receive untagged traffic that enters the switch through that port.

To set up a guest VLAN on your Insight Managed Smart Cloud Switch with the Insight app:

  1. Launch Insight.
  2. If you have an Insight Pro account, select an organization.
  3. If you do not see your switch listed or its status is not green, see How can I troubleshoot connectivity problems between my device and the Insight app?.
  4. Select the switch on which you want to set up a VLAN.
  5. Tap VLANs in Use. The default VLANs for video (VLAN 4089) and management (VLAN 1) display.
  6. Tap + in the upper right corner of the page. The Create VLAN page displays.
  7. Tap Create Guest Network.
  8. Under VLAN Name, enter Guest or another easily identifiable name of your choice. This example uses Guest as the VLAN name.
  9. Under VLAN ID, enter 2 or another number of your choice. This example uses 2 as the guest VLAN ID. Note: VLAN IDs can be any number from 1 – 4093 except the following reserved IDs:
  • 1 (management VLAN)
  • 4088 (auto-VOIP)
  • 4089 (auto-video)
  1. Scroll down to Port Members and click the drop down arrow. Note: If your switch has more than 8 ports, swipe left and right to view all of the ports.
  2. One at a time, select each port that you want to be a member of the guest VLAN and tap Untag. In this example, ports 1, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are members of the guest VLAN. screenshot of the Config VLAN page after ports 1, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are made untagged members of the guest VLAN
  3. Tap Save. Your new guest VLAN is now in the VLAN list.
  4. Tap Devices to return to your list of Insight devices.
  5. Select your switch and tap CONFIG PORTS.
  6. Tap ports 5, 6, 7, and 8 to select them.
  7. Scroll down to Default VLAN (PVID) and select your new guest VLAN.
  8. Tap Save. Guests can now connect devices to ports 5-8 on your switch without being able to see your network traffic on ports 1-4.

The following table shows how the ports are configured in this example:
