How Long Does It Take To Beat & Complete Sifu? - CBR

It's only February, but already Sifu is laying a claim to being one of the hottest games of 2022. The kung fu release follows the unnamed "Martial Artist" as they track down the killers responsible for the death of their father and mentor. Thanks to its fluid, brutal combat, stylistic visual aesthetic and novel core ageing mechanic, Sloclap's latest looks set to take the critical and commercial world by storm.

While Sifu seems to be a relatively short game ostensibly, its fundamental design prevents things from being so simple. While the game doesn't have a huge emphasis on collectibles or hidden items in the same way that larger, more expansive titles do, players looking for true completion will be seeking to unlock the game's "True Ending," a more rewarding and fitting finale to Sifu's gritty revenge tale.

According to a general consensus of critics and early access players, Sifu will take between around eight to 10 hours to beat. Slocap's martial arts beat-'em-up has no difficulty settings, meaning that players who are more familiar with these sorts of titles will find their times dropping significantly, while others who find the game's aggressive AI and challenging defense mechanics a little trickier could easily exceed the 10-hour mark.

Because of Sifu's central gimmick of having its character age every time they are bested, players will benefit from taking as few deaths as possible so that character moves and skills aren't made more difficult with the player's aging. Getting older in Sifu may make the Martial Artist stronger, but they are also rendered more fragile and brittle by the march of time, meaning that health and resilience decrease as the years tick down. Because of this, most players will end up running through the game multiple times to hone their skills and reduce their age, so times will vary depending on whether this is a person's first or tenth run.

Sifu is an odd title in the sense that completion isn't simply achieved by gathering a set number of items or finishing a given number of side quests. Rather, true completion depends on a player's ability to unlock the game's revelatory hidden ending. To truly excel and keep deaths relatively low, players will require multiple reruns and playthroughs so as to hone their skills and limit the age they reach by Sifu's climax. Unlocking the game's True Ending requires players to return to each level and find collectibles and dialogue choices as well, raising the completion time to around 15 hours.

Sifu may seem to be a relatively short and linear game on paper, but the real joy of the game will be in honing one's skills and going back through the maze of levels and bosses with the fewest number of fatalities so as to keep young, agile and nimble. Sifu's completion times appear short, but it seems there's no limit to how effective and efficient dedicated players can eventually become.
