To keep fit, many places recommend taking 10,000 steps a day.

That seems like a hell of a lot, and it actually is for the average sedentary person.

A marathon is officially 26.219 miles

That’s 1,661,235.84 inches in total.

If we use the average male step length of 30 inches, that means your marathon would take 55,374 steps to complete.

For a woman, the average step length is 26.4 inches. That’s 62,926 steps.

It’s worth noting, though, that stride length can vary greatly.

Livestrong states that a woman’s stride length can reach 58 inches, while men got to around 81 inches in the 10k.

With these figures taken into account, the amount of steps can be reduced to about 20,509.

If you’re doing a marathon, try not to worry too much about these figures, though,

Running experts say that since height and style of running are factors in this, it’ll vary from person to person.

Instead, you’re advised to focusing on keeping a stride rate of about 180 to 200 steps per minute.

This will take some time to get used to if you’re an amateur runner, but it can help prevent injury and increase your speed.

A mum thought her son was being 'silly' by not walking properly until discovering it was a symptom of cancer - claiming their Christmas Day walk 'saved his life'. Ania Hough, from Staplehurst in Kent, said her then eight-year-old son Jamie Hough had first complained of a headache in October 2023 and started vomiting.
