Read time: 3 minutes

We previously wrote about how to apply beard oil in our Academy blog. Now it’s time to teach you how to apply its sibling: beard balms. Like beard oils, they moisturise and condition the beard hairs for a healthier look, while also preventing itchiness and dandruff.

It’s a simple process overall, however, there are some tips in applying it correctly. If you’re a beginner and a little intimidated by it, fret not because in this article we’re going to teach you how to apply beard balm in 4 steps.

Quick Tips

How to apply beard balm for beginners

1. Take out a pea-sized amount

Use your thumb or index finger to scoop out a pea-sized amount from the pot. If you’re struggling to take out the product, use the back of your thumb nail to scrape out the balm from the container.

2. Melt the product

Spread the balm on your palms by rubbing your hands together. The rubbing will melt the balm into your hands.

3. Apply to the skin first

Keep your fingers flat and start by applying the beard balm to skin underneath your beard by rubbing deeply or pressing it in. Though the texture is thicker, there’s no need to ‘claw’ into the skin like you’re itching it.

4. Apply to beard hairs

The best way is to start from the bottom of your beard and work your way upwards to the sideburns by rubbing your open hands in an upwards swiping motion. Finish off by using a beard comb or brush to continue evenly distributing product and removing any clumps that might have got stuck in between hairs.

The (optional) last step is the best step: admire the finished look!

Beard Balm FAQs

What are the benefits of beard balm?

Beard balms have plenty of benefits including (but not limited to):

  • Keeps the beard looking healthy and neatly kept
  • The thicker texture helps to control unruly hairs that can't be tamed by an oil
  • Reducing dandruff by moisturising the skin underneath the beard hair
  • Preventing itchiness by moisturising the hairs
  • Most, if not all, beard balms have a unique scent to make your grooming routine enjoyable

When should I apply beard balm?

The best time to apply beard balm is after a shower. Why? Because this is when your beard is completely clean and the beard hair is softest, making applying the balm easier and the hairs easier to style.

What is the difference between a beard oil and beard balm? Is a beard balm for me?

We actually wrote an article about their differences which you can read. The difference is mainly in texture–beard balms are heavier while beard oils are lighter. There also tends to be more ingredients and emollient factors in a beard balm. Beard balms are best suited for men with medium to long beards.

Can I apply beard balms after shaving?

While you can apply beard oils after shaving, we generally don’t recommend applying a beard balm after shaving due to the thicker texture. However, you can still apply it very sparingly if you’ve trimmed the beard.

How often should I use a beard balm?

It’s honestly up to you, but we generally advise applying it every time after you shower and whenever it feels itchy and uncomfortable.

Can I use beard oil and beard balm together at the same time?

Yes and no. There are a few answers to this question. If you really want to incorporate both into your grooming routine, the easiest way is to alternate by using beard oil in the morning and then a beard balm at night. Aside from that, most men stick to one or the other.

The argument against using both at the same time is that it’s can be too much oil for the skin, and might result in clogged pores and breakouts. However, if you suffer from extremely dry skin and have a thick beard, it’s something to consider. Experiment and see how you go.

So what is the best beard balm for me?

There isn’t a “best” beard balm per se. It just comes down to personal preference and what kind of scent you like. Nonetheless, here are some of our recommendations and customer favourites:
