How to Use Beard Balm (Dry Oil) - Quick Reference

BY Adam Barraclough

Applying Beard Balm by hand and with the Can You Handlebar Beard Oil Brush®

Beard Balm is a staple of beard care, providing all the conditioning benefit of liquid beard oil with a light hold that allows for some taming and shaping of the beard. It's a favorite among guys who are new to beard care simply because it's so intuitive, portable and spill-proof, while those with longer beards appreciate the ability to reign in flyaways. Here's a quick guide to using and applying beard balm.

NOTE: Where most beard oils may feel similar in-hand, you'll find a great variety of firmness, feel and consistency in beard balms across brands. We refer to our beard balm as Dry Oil because it's a solid at room temperature that melts easily in the hand or with slight friction. Our Dry Oil has a very soft, smooth, non-grainy feel.

To Apply beard balm by hand: Carve out a small portion, it's always best to start small, you can always add more as needed. Place it in the palm of one hand and work the balm between your hands to warm it. You'll notice it melts quickly and easily, this will help ensure complete coverage.

Scoop beard balm with your thumbnail to apply by hand

Thoroughly massage the product into your beard from the bottom up. Make sure to work your fingers down the skin beneath your beard as well. Then lightly sculpt your beard with your hands to manage any loose hairs. You should notice a nice top-shine and greater manageability.

Warm the beard balm by rubbing your hands together, then massage into your beard

To Apply Beard Balm (Dry Oil) using the Can You Handlebar Beard Oil Brush®: Lightly touch the surface of the balm with the horsehair brush and give it a quarter turn. The brush has been designed to fit perfectly in your hand and sized to match the stainless steel can as well.

The Can You Handlebar Beard Oil Brush® fits perfectly in the Beard Balm tin

Once you have a small portion of beard balm on the brush, massage it directly into your entire beard, making sure to get down to the skin. The friction of the bristles and the brushing action will evenly disperse it throughout your beard. The brush and balm combo provides a composed look and should tuck in any flyaways, leaving you looking your best.

Apply beard balm with the beard oil brush by brushing into your entire beard

As a bonus, you can make an emergency candle from the Beard Balm (Dry Oil) and its thoughtfully designed packaging: There are lots of good beard balms out there, but how many can save your life? To make an emergency candle with the cardboard sleeve: tear off the top tab of the Dry Oil packaging, fold it and roll it up to create an impromptu wick. Dip one end of the wick into the balm, then place the undipped side into the balm, all the way down to the bottom of the can. Light, and you'll have several minutes of emergency light and heat.

    Hi Vernon,

Tim here. Thank you so much for taking time to stop by the blog. I’m glad to hear you are loving that Initiative scent, it’s one of my absolute favorites as well. I’m really sorry to hear about that mishap with the balm and package. That’s no good at all! Typically we are shipping in the US and things stay in great shape during that short delivery window.

I appreciate you letting us know as well as the feedback no packaging so this doesn’t happen again. I want to send you a replacement so you can confidently go for that yeard! I’ll email you and get you all set.

    Take care and stay bearded,

    Tim

    Hey Tim!

Vern here all the way from Kuwait. My products just came in a couple of hours ago and boy was I excited that I showered up and loaded up my beard with a good dose of beard balm. For today I used the Initiative beard balm and man I sure did get more that what I was expecting. I’m giving the product a straight 11 outta’ 10. ESPECIALLY THAT FRAGRANCE! WHEWWW!! BLEW MY MIND AWAY! The consistency’s excellent too! Makes my beard look super dense and keeps ‘em fly away hairs in check. I’ll load my beard up with some Goodwill tomorrow and will definitely leave a review after.

I had just one serious issue and it’s not related to the product but to the packaging. Kuwait’s a relatively hot country with temperatures that easily soar over 140°F during summer. By the time my package had arrived, most of balm had leaked out the tin container soaking up the outer cardboard box. I was disappointed because upon opening the tin, I had nothing more than 1/4th of balm remaining in both tins. Purchased approx. 120ml (2 Tins) of balm but now I’m left with only about 20-30ml in total due to the leakage. Maybe if y’all could seal the tin with a tamper proof seal on the inside that would be great way to avoid leakage. Only reason I’m notifying y’all about this issue is because I have embarked on my journey to grow out a Yeard and I’m looking forward to using no other products apart from CanYouHandlebar.

Once again, apart from the leakage issue, I truly give the balm an 11 outta’ 10!

Y’all have just earned another life long customer! Stay Rockin’! 🍻

    Hi Chris,

Tim here :) Sounds like you have a nice beard routine there! Happy to hear you are one of the fortunate ones who still has head hair to put that product on when you are done. LOL. Most of us here have given up and shave our heads.

In all seriousness, I am glad you have found a way to get the balm and oils thoroughly spread through your beard and moustache as well as the hair on your head. Thanks for checking out the blog and leaving the comment!

Hi Adam, (or is it Tim?) 🙂

I use my hands when applying balms and oils to my beard as I like to massage the product into my skin. I then use a boar hair brush to further spread the product evenly through my beard and tash and stimulate the hair follicles.

I then run my hands through my head hair to clear any excess product off my hands. Gives the added benefit of scenting my hair the same as my beard – and adds a slight sheen if using oil or a little hold when using balm. Both seem to help condition my head hair too. Bonus!

    Hey Trevor,

    Great question!

You can definitely use the same brush for the different “flavors” of beard balm. The main thing to keep in mind is keeping the beard oil brush clean. Check out our quick reference post/video specifically about the beard oil brush for how to clean it. Keeping it clean will prevent build up, help clear out the scent of a different balm, and will make sure your beard oil brush lasts a long time.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Enjoy your day, Tim - Can You Handlebar

    Hey Tim,

Just one question - with all the different “flavors” of beard balm, can the same beard brush be used for all or should a different brush be used for each different scent? I’m just wondering if after several different scent are mixed on the same brush it would take on an unkindly smell.

    Hey Chuck,

Thanks so much for letting us know you love the Beard Oil Brush. Haha, yes, it does work quite a bit better than hands. I keep mine on my desk and use it daily.

Sorry about that strong smell. It is likely the horse hair which has a well, horsey smell to it. Airing it out is the best thing so good call there. Also, as you use it to apply beard oil or balm, the scent from the balm or oil will help too.

I forgot to mention the only negative was the strong smell which I assume is a sealant for the wood. I am letting it air out.

I’m sorry I waited to buy this brush! It works so much better than my hands. Makes my beard look better without trimming flyaways.

    Hey Chris,

Tim here. Thanks so much for checking out the blog. Great to hear you’re loving the Devotion dry oil. Excited to hear how you like Wisdom and Initiative.

    Great question!

Winter is such a challenge for everyone, and especially if you’re in a dry climate. I live at 8500 feet in the Colorado Rockies and so totally understand the dryness. I’m not sure which beard wash you’re using but that may or may not be the issue. If you’re washing too much it can actually dry your beard out. You might try cutting back to 2-3 times a week.

The most important thing is to follow up washing your beard by applying the beard oil and making sure it really gets into your skin and all of your beard. If you’re noticing your beard feels dry and brittle by the afternoon, put a little more beard oil or dry oil on it. We also carry a Face Lotion that can help keep things hydrated.

    Hope that helps.

    Hey guys,

Love your product, btw! I have the Devotion dry oil and just order the Citrus Blend and the Bright and Woodsy; excited to try them booth!

Anyways, to my question; I live in western Canada (Alberta) and it is very dry here, especially in the winter. Even with the dry beard oil that I put in the morning, after my shower, by about 2-3 oclock that afternoon,my beard feels dry and brittle. Could it be my beard wash? I was told only to wash my beard 3-4 times a week. Thx again guys, cheers!

    Hey Gary,

Tim here. Thanks so much for checking out the blog. Great questions! The best time to apply dry beard oil (or any beard oil) is after you’ve washed your beard and towel dried it. This let’s your beard and skin absorb all the moisture from the shower before conditioning it with the dry beard oil.

I’m not familiar with the Trader Joe’s product. Our dry beard oils are made with the highest quality natural ingredients that are designed specifically to make sure your skin and beard are as healthy and hydrated as possible. We’ve spent years perfecting the recipe with beards in mind and have a combined 30 years of beard experience on our time. We use a blend of light, medium and heavy carrier oils to ensure maximum hydration and protection for your beard and skin.

Hope that helps! Let me know if I can help with anything else, ok?

Should my beard be dry, wet or damp when applying dry beard oil. I’ve been using the following products for the last 8 months to keep my beard moisturized. Trader Joe’s Head to Toe Balm, Vitamin “E” oil and Argan Oil. So I have to ask, what makes your product better for my beard.

    Thank You,
