Applin is a rare Pokemon in Sword and Shield that evolves into one of two Pokemon: Appletun or Flapple. This page covers exactly how to capture Applin in Sword and Shield, and how to evolve it into Appletun or Flapple.

How to Evolve Applin in Sword and Shield Quick Guide

• Catch Applin
• Find a Sweet Apple (Shield) or Tart Apple (Sword)
• Give the Applin a Tart / Sweet Apple to evolve it into Flapple or Appletun

How to Catch Applin - Locations

Applin can be found like most Pokemon in Sword and Shield: in patches of grass. However, Applin will only appear as rare ! surprise ! encounters, and not in the overworld, on Route 5.

Applin can also be found in the Wild Area during certain weather conditions.

Applin Locations:

Wild Area: Stony Wilderness	Thunderstorm Weather
Wild Area: Giant's Mirror	Thunderstorm Weather
Wild Area: Dusty Bowl	Sunny Weather

Applin can also be found as a boss in Max Raid Battles in the Wild Area.

How to Evolve Applin into Flapple or Appletun

If you catch an Applin as soon as you encounter one on Route 5, you won't be able to evolve it for a while, unfortunately, and this is because Applin will only evolve once given a Sweet Apple or a Tart Apple.

A Sweet Apple will evolve Applin into an Appletun. Sweet Apples are exclusive to Pokemon Shield.

A Tart Apple will evolve Applin into a Flapple. Tart Apples are exclusive to Pokemon Sword.

Even if you trade these items between games, the evolution will not work! Appletun is exclusive to Shield and Flapple is exclusive to Sword.

Where to Find Sweet Apple and Tart Apple to Evolve Applin

There are a few ways to find these items, the Sweet Apple and Tart Apple, in Pokemon Sword and Shield.

• From an NPC in the westside of Hammerlocke
• As a reward from the Battle Cafes in Motostoke, Hammerlocke, and Wyndon.
• Beneath a certain tree in the Wild Area.

Here are the exact instructions.

From the Boy in Hammerlocke who wants an Applin

The soonest you'll be able to guarantee a Sweet or Tart Apple is in Hammerlocke Head to the west-most exit inside the city of Hammerlocke which leads to Route 6.

Here, a boy will be loitering by the exit, requesting an Applin. Give him an Applin. After a sweet mini-cutscene, the man will return your Applin to you and give you an item.

In Pokemon Sword, the Applin guy will give you a Tart Apple.

In Pokemon Shield, the Applin guy will give you a Sweet Apple.

Specific Tree in the Wild Area

Additionally, once you upgrade the Rotom Bike to be able to travel on water (which you'll get soon after defeating the Circhester Gym). Once you can travel across the water, head to the Axew's Eye in the Wild Area.

It's a small island in-between the Motostoke entrance and the Meetup Spot trainstop entrance. There's a tree here with sparkles at its base, indicating items.

There are Fancy Apples ( a curry ingredient) here, but you will also be able to often find Sweet Apples (Shield) and Tart Apples (Sword.)

Because items respawn in the Wild Area each day, you will be able to collect multiple Apples with this method.

Battle Cafes Reward

Each day, you can challenge the Battle Cafes in these locations:

• Motostoke
• Hammerlocke
• Wyndon

You may receive an Sweet Apple (Shield) or Tart Apple (Sword) as a reward for winning.
