Your Applin evolution depends on your version.
By Casey DeFreitas, Miranda SanchezUpdated: Dec 3, 2019 1:29 amPosted: Nov 21, 2019 9:40 pmApplin is a rare Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield, and its evolution depends entirely on your version of Gen 8. Learn what you'll need to get Flapple in Pokemon Sword or Appletun in Pokemon Shield written below or watch the video above. For even more guides, be sure to visit IGN's Pokemon Sword and Shield guide.
How to Find and Catch Applin
If you're still on the hunt for Applin, you can find it in a few places. Applin does not appear in the overworld, but you can find it on Route 5 in surprise encounters by running through the tall grass. You can also find Applin in the following locations in the Wild Area:
Stony Wilderness in thunderstorm weather
Giant's Mirror in thunderstorm weather
Dusty Bowl in sunny weather
Evolving Applin after initially visiting Route 5 takes some time, though.
How to Get a Sweet Apple or Tart Apple
In order to evolve Applin you'll need either the Sweet Apple or Tart Apple — keep in mind the item you'll get is entirely dependent on your version. Sweet Apples are exclusive Pokemon Shield and evolve Applin into Appletun. Tart Apples are exclusive to Pokemon Sword and evolve Applin into Flapple. Note that even though you could trade the items between versions, the other version's apple will not evolve Applin. There are three ways for you to get your version's item, but the earliest you're guaranteed to get one of Applin's evolution items is once you reach Hammerlocke. There, you'll need to go to the west side of town toward Route 6 to find this lovestruck NPC: Go ahead and give him your Applin — don't worry, you'll get it back! This boy will also give you either a Tart Apple or Sweet Apple with your Applin. You'll also be able to find your version's Applin evolution item in the Wild Area's Axew's Eye on the island shown below: This island is only accessible after you've defeated the Circhester Gym. If you have, you can travel to this island with your Rotom Bike and collect the sparkling items at the base of a tree. You'll find Fancy Apples for curry along with either the Sweet Apple in Shield or Tart Apple in Sword. Items respawn in the Wild Area daily, so be sure to check this area again if you need more evolution apples!Sweet Apples and Tart Apples are also possible rewards for the Battle Cafes in Motostoke, Hammerlocke, and Wyndon. You can battle at each of these cafes daily.Pokemon Sword and Shield have plenty of other unique Pokemon evolutions, including Alcremie's many flavor forms and the usual Eeveelutions. See how to evolve all your Pokemon with the Sword and Shield evolution guide. Casey DeFreitas is a wiki editor at IGN and Nintendo Voice Chat's host.
