How to Connect a Wii Console to the Internet

In this article, you'll learn how to connect the Wii console to the Internet using a wireless connection.

Note: The Wii mini does not support online functionality. It cannot be connected to the Internet via a wireless connection.

Complete these steps

  1. Power on your Wii console and press the A Button on the Wii Remote to reach the Wii main menu. Use the Wii Remote to select the Wii button. Wii button highlighted on the Wii main menu
  2. Select Wii Settings to access the Wii System Settings menu. Wii Settings option highlighted on the right of the Wii Settings screen
  3. Using the arrow on the right side of the screen, scroll to page two and select Internet. Internet button highlighted on the second page of Wii System Settings
  4. Select Connection Settings. Connection Settings option highlighted on the Internet menu in Wii Settings
  5. Select Connection 1: None.
    • If you do not have an empty connection slot, you will need to clear a slot. Connection 1, set for None, option highlighted on the Connection Settings menu
  6. Click on Wireless Connection, then click Search for an Access Point.
    • If using a wired Internet connection, you may find our information on How to Connect the Wii to the Internet with a Wired Connection helpful. Search for an Access Point option shown on the Connection 1 menu after clicking Wireless Connection
  7. Select OK. The Wii will display all the wireless networks it finds. OK highlighted on the Connection 1 menu to initiate the search for access points
  8. Select the wireless network that is yours.(If you're not sure which is yours, or you don't see any wireless networks, you may find our information on Unable to Find a Wireless Access Point helpful.)
Asked to enter a security key?
    • If you are prompted to Enter the Password or Key, then the wireless network you are trying to connect to has wireless security turned on. You will need to type in your security key or password and select OK. Enter the Password or Key field shown when a chosen access point has wireless security turned on
    • If you need to switch between upper and lower-case letters, or numbers and symbols, select the Shift key on the on-screen keyboard.
    • Ensure you review the security type in the top-left corner as well. If this is not the same security type that is used by your router, select Change Security Settings and select the appropriate security type.
Don’t know your router's security key?

Let us help you find your router's security key. Select the brand of your router below and we'll provide you with the default information for that brand!

    • Linksys
    • Netgear
    • D-Link
    • Belkin
    • Apple
    • 2Wire
    • All other brands
  9. Select OK 3 times to save your settings and start an Internet connection test.
    • The Wii console will run a connection test with your wireless network.
    • When the test is completed, you should see the following screen: As long as you see The connection test was successful, the Wii Support Code does not matter and can be ignored. Connection test status popup displayed after the connection test was performed
    • If the connection test succeeds, then your Wii is now connected to the internet.
    • If the connection test was not successful, you will receive an error code.
      • Error Code 51330 or 52130: This means the security code you entered into the Wii is not the same one your router is set to. Look in your router's settings and try again. Please refer to step eight (8) above for more information.
      • All other error codes, search our infobase for more information. (You can ignore any Wii Support Code you receive on a connection test.)
