Broccoli is one of our most used vegetables over the years. I thought I would teach you our simple way on how to cut broccoli. Use these easy instructions to prepare broccoli florets in recipes like Broccoli Bacon Spaghetti, Broccoli Cheese Casserole and Broccoli Salad.

Benefits of Eating Broccoli

Although some do not like the taste of broccoli, there are many nutrition benefits to adding this veggie into your diet. Similar to the taste of brussel sprouts, it contains an anti-cancer compound but is richer in vitamin C, calcium, iron and vitamin K.

How to Cut Broccoli

  1. Wash head of broccoli in a large colander and dry. Discard broccoli leaves.
  2. Place broccoli on large cutting board.
  3. Use a sharp knife to slice the floret stems where they meet the stalk.
  4. Cut large pieces in half, to create a uniform size.
  5. Use in your favorite recipes that call for fresh broccoli.

The Best Knives to Use

We are not partial to any brand of knives, but you will want a sharp knife anytime you are cutting fresh vegetables. I like to use a larger chef's knife, but sometimes I use a smaller pairing knife.

What to do with Broccoli Stems

The broccoli stems are also edible. You can dice them and use them in recipes or eat them raw. They're great dipped in ranch dressing!

Roasting Broccoli

The best way to cut broccoli for roasting in the oven is into florets. We cut them fairly larger for roasting when I want to serve as a side dish. If I'm roasting broccoli in the oven just for snacking, I tend to cut the broccoli into smaller pieces.

To roast broccoli, preheat the oven to 400°F to 415°F. Layer cut broccoli on baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil then sprinkle with salt. Toss to evenly coat with the oil and bake to desired doneness. We typically do around 20 minutes, depending on the size of the florets.

How to Store Broccoli

After you cut broccoli florets store them in a bowl or container between lightly damp paper towels. Do not place in a sealed container because it needs air to stay fresh. The paper towels allow the air to pass through. Place in the coldest part of your fridge, typically the back, for up to 1 week.
