Home - Interior How to Disconnect a Refrigerator James Clark By James Clark Updated September 26, 2017

All electric refrigerators have at least one and in some cases two connection points to the room in which they are installed. The power cord connects to a standard three-prong grounded outlet. On models with an ice maker or cold water dispenser, the refrigerator is also connected to a water supply line. Both must be disconnected before moving or replacing the refrigerator in your kitchen, garage or rec room.

Unplug the power cord and shut off the water line to disconnect your refrigerator.
  1. Slide the refrigerator out from the wall to reach the electrical cord behind the appliance. Unplug the cord from the wall outlet.

  2. Close the water supply valve to the ice maker, if your refrigerator has one, turning the valve knob clockwise until tight. The valve is located either along the pipe that connects to the back of the refrigerator or beneath the kitchen sink. Under the sink, you'll find the valve where the water supply line taps into the cold water pipe, which is on the right side.

  3. Twist the hex nut counterclockwise on the end of the water supply line where it connects to the rear of the refrigerator, using pliers. Lower the end of the water line into a bucket to catch the excess water.
