For the first step you will need to draw the outlined shape of the skull.

Next, draw the large open cavities for the eyes in a double layer of circles. When that is done draw the nasal cavity too.

Next, draw petal like shapes around the eyes, then draw hearts inside the eye cavities. You will color around the hearts so there is a solid background. Add another outline around the nose hole too.

Start the mouth by drawing a line that will separate the top row of skeletal teeth from the bottom.

Draw in the skull's teeth and then draw the designs on the chin, and upper mandible. Notice that the front tooth is shaped like a heart.

Make nice wispy designs on the sides of the skulls head. When that is done make some petals on the cheek bones.

Draw the center of the rose which is a bud and then add some layers.

Make more petals for the rose on the center of the skull's head, then proceed to step nine where you will finish the rose.

Add the last of the petals which spread out in a full bloom display. You can erase mistakes that you might have made so you have a clean drawing to color in.

Now you can add some color to really bring out the artwork created on this sugar skull design.

Description: Some of you already know what kind of skull you are looking at here. I only have a handful of tuts on this type of art, but when I do make new ones I like to make them colorful and bright. Today I will upload two lesson (that includes this one) on figures for the upcoming Day of the Dead which is a holiday celebrated throughout Mexico that starts October 31st, November 1st and November 2nd. Sugar skulls are traditionally called calaveras which means 'skull' in Spanish. Calaveras are either made of clay or sugar, and they are decorated in a colorful display. After the celebration folks either throw the skulls away, or they eat them. In any case if you are going to be celebrating the Day of the Dead, you will enjoy drawing a sugar skull easy.
