How To Flip A Pancake This Shrove Tuesday - 9Kitchen - Nine

Flipping pancakeslooks easy, but in reality it can be tricky.

Today is Shrove Tuesday or 'Pancake Day' and an executive chef has shared their tips for achieving the feat.

According to Dana Murrell, executive chef at meal kit delivery service Green Chef, it's all about having the right tools.

Murrell told Eat This, Not That a flat, nonstick pan is a must because it makes it easier to get your spatula underneath it.

Then, it's about achieving the right temperature.

"I like to cook my pancakes over medium-low so that the pan is hot enough to give a nice golden brown colour, but not so hot that it burns before it is ready to flip," the chef explains.

"You should see steam coming off the pan, not smoke."

The next step is butter, which Murrell says makes for a tastier pancake and also prevents it sticking to the pan.

A large, flat spatula is also key and plain pancakes "will always flip better" according to the chef.

"Lighter batters are best, not necessarily for flipping, but for even cooking," they explain.

"You know it's time to flip when you see air bubbles rise to the surface throughout the pancake — not just the sides."

A dense batter may take longer for air bubbles to reach the surface and could result in burning the first side."

Once you have flipped your pancake and it is golden brown on both sides, your pancake is ready to slide onto a plate and enjoy.
