Shears are used for shearing sheep, harvesting plants, gathering cobwebs and destroying wool blocks in Minecraft. They're very simple to craft.
Steps
Part 1 Part 1 of 3:Finding the Materials
-
1 Mine for iron. You'll need two pieces of iron ore. -
2 Smelt it. This is done by placing the two iron ore into a furnace. Place iron in the top slot, fuel (coal) in the bottom slot. Advertisement -
3 Retrieve the two iron ingots that you have smelted. Advertisement
Crafting the Shears
-
1 Place the two iron ingots into your crafting grid. - If you've made a crafting table, your grid size will be 3x3. Otherwise, it'll be 2x2.[1]
-
2 In either case, arrange the ingots as shown above: - Place one iron ingot in the center left column.
- Place the other iron ingot in the center top row.
-
3 Shift click or drag the shears to your inventory. Advertisement
Using the Shears
Shears can shear sheep, destroy wool faster or harvest tall grass, leaves, dead bushes, vines and ferns.
-
1 Shear a sheep. With the shears in your hand, stand next to a sheep and right click. You will shear the sheep. To retrieve the wool, simply walk over it. - You will get from 1 to 3 blocks of wool from each sheep you shear.
- Be careful in Minecraft Pocket Edition. If you're not careful, you can kill the sheep. To shear one properly, touch and hold down on the screen, in the way you'd break a block. Otherwise shearing the sheep can hurt the sheep and will kill it after 8 hits.
-
2 Harvest plants. With the shears in your hands, left click on the plant. - Note that some plants can be harvested without shears but some plants are better harvested using shears, such as ferns, tall grass, vines, leaves and dead bushes.
-
3 Destroy a cobweb. Use the shears to remove cobwebs almost instantly. Left click to begin the action. You'll get a piece of string for your efforts. -
4 Use shears on a mooshroom. Right click and you will receive 5 red mushrooms and restores the mooshroom to a cow. - You can also shear a brown mooshroom, which will drop 5 brown mooshroom upon being sheared, and will also be restored to a normal cow.
-
5 Destroy wool faster. If you have misplaced the wool, you may need to destroy it. Without shears, doing this can take some time. To destroy, place the shears in your hands and left click. - The shears will not be damaged by destroying wool blocks.

Verin Top Answerer Yes, naming sheep "jeb_" only affects how the sheep itself appears in-game. The actual colour of the wool you get from shearing it however is unaffected. Thanks!
