How To Program Cox Remote To TV In Seconds - Robot Powered Home
Maybe your like
Cox was one of the few traditional TV providers to offer plans that include home automation along with their internet and TV, and since I experiment a lot with home automation, I had to try it.
After you get the equipment from Cox installed at your home, the first step is to pair the remote with your TV.
Cox’s guides are comprehensive and easy to follow, but there are some key things that they do not mention.
I went through all the manuals and went to Cox’s user forums to find out where people had issues with pairing.
I am making this guide to cover all the bases so that you can pair your Cox remote to your TV.
To program your Cox remote to your TV, first find the model of your remote. Then point the remote at the TV and press and hold the Select and Mute buttons and type the manufacturer’s remote code.
Types of Cox Remotes

Identifying the model of remote you have is the first step before actually pairing the remote.
Each remote has a slightly different pairing process, so identifying the remote makes your job much easier.
From left to right, the models in the image are the:
- Contour URC 8820
- Contour M7820
- Contour XR15
- Contour XR11
- The Mini Box RF3220-R
- The Mini Box URC2220
Program Cox Remote Using ‘Device Code Entry’ Method

The device code entry method requires you to find out the code to pair the remote for your specific TV.
Use a code finding tool to know what code your TV uses.
Then follow the steps below for your remote model.
If you have a Contour URC 8820:
- Point the remote at the TV and press the TV mode key.
- Note down your TV code from the tool linked above.
- Press and hold the Select and Mute buttons. The TV mode key will blink twice, release them after the blinking.
- Enter the four-digit TV code you noted down with the remote.
- Press the Power key to test if the remote has been paired.
If you have a Contour M7820:
- Point the remote at the TV and press the TV key once.
- Note down your TV code from the code tool.
- Press and hold the Setup button. The TV mode key will blink twice, release them after the blinking.
- Enter the four-digit TV code you noted down with the remote.
- Press the Power key to test if the remote has been paired.
If you have a Mini Box RF3220-R:
- Point the remote at the TV and press the TV Power key once.
- Press and hold the Setup button. The LED will blink twice; release them after the blinking.
- Note down your TV code from the code tool.
- Enter the four-digit TV code you noted down with the remote.
- Press the Power key to test if the remote has been paired.
Program Cox Remote Using ‘Popular Brands Quick-Programming’ Method

Cox has assigned TV codes to some major brands as shortcuts that are easier to remember.
It is usually is a one-digit key code that you can find in the remote manual.
Programming the remote this way entails a few changes to the code entry method, but overall, it largely remains the same.
If you have a Contour URC 8820:
- Turn the TV on
- Find the one-digit code for your TV in the Popular Brands section of the remote manual.
- Press and hold the Select and Mute buttons. The TV mode key will blink twice, release them after the blinking.
- Press the TV key on the remote. The button’s backlight should stay on.
- Enter the one-digit code for your TV. Hold the key until the TV turns off.
- You have successfully paired the remote to your TV.
If you have a Mini Box RF3220-R:
- Point the remote at the TV and press the TV Power key once.
- Press and hold the Setup button. The LED will blink twice; release them after the blinking.
- Find the one-digit code for your TV in the Popular Brands section of the remote manual.
- Press and hold the correct one digit TV code you found in the manual for your TV and keep holding it until the TV turns off.
- Press the Power key to test if the remote has been paired.
Program Cox Remote Using the ‘Searching All Codes’ Method

Besides using an online tool or the shortcut code, you can manually look through all the codes and input them yourself during the pairing process.
This is a more time-consuming task and requires you to sift through every manufacturer’s code to find yours.
Do this if the code is not in the lookup tool or there is no shortcut code for your TV model.
Follow these steps to pair the remote with the Searching All Codes method:
If you have a Contour URC 8820:
- Point the remote at the TV.
- Press and hold the Select and Mute buttons. The TV mode key will blink twice, release them after the blinking.
- Press the TV mode key. The LED should stay on.
- Now press and hold the Select button. This will take time since the remote is searching through all the codes it has to arrive at the correct one for your TV.
- When your TV turns off, let go of the Select button. The remote is now successfully paired to your TV.
If you have a Contour M7820:
- Point the remote at the TV.
- Press the TV key once.
- Now press and hold the Setup button until the mode key blinks twice, then let it go.
- Press 9-9-1 on the keypad.
- Press Power once.
- Press CH+ and CH- repeatedly. This will start the code search. Stop pressing the keys when the TV turns off.
- Press Setup to save the code. It has been correctly saved if the TV key blinks twice.
If you have a Mini Box RF3220-R:
- Turn your TV on.
- Press and hold the Setup button until the LED blinks twice.
- Press TV Power.
- Press and hold the Select key. It will run through all the codes until it finds the right one. When it does, the TV will turn off.
- Let go of the Select button when the TV turns off.
Finding the 4-Digit Code

Finding the four-digit code must be your priority before you pair the remote to your TV.
Each TV brand has a unique code that lets you pair the remote to it.
Most service providers do this, and it’s no different for Cox.
Fortunately, there are online code lookup tools and shortcut codes for major brands that make your life easier, but Cox still lets you search manually for the code.
How to Program XR11 to TV?

The XR11 is the remote you have if you have the Contour 2 receiver.
It can listen to voice commands and support enhanced viewing features.
It’s easier than the other remotes when it comes to pairing and general use as well.
To pair the XR11 remote to your TV:
- Point the remote at the TV and press and hold down the Setup button.
- Wait for the status LED to turn green. Then release it.
- Find the five-digit code for your TV manufacturer. Use the manual or a code lookup tool to find the code.
- Enter the code with the keypad. Let the status LED blink twice.
- Press the Power button to test if it has correctly paired.
How to Program XR15 to TV?

The XR15 is a variant of the XR11 and comes with the Contour 2 receiver as well.
They largely follow the same pairing method.
- Turn on the TV.
- Press and hold the Contour and Mute buttons until the LED lights up green.
- Find the five-digit code for your TV manufacturer. Use the manual or a code lookup tool to find the code.
- With the keypad, enter the code you found.
- Press the Power key to test the remote.
How to Program Cox Mini-Box Remote

We had already talked about one of the Cox Mini-Box remote models, the RF3220-R.
Here we will pair another variant of the remote, the URC2220.
To pair this remote:
- Turn on your TV.
- Press the TV Power key.
- Press and hold the Setup key until the LED light blinks twice.
- Find the pairing code from the remote manual or an online code lookup tool.
- Enter the code with the keypad.
- Press the Power button to test if the pairing was successful.
Common Mistakes While Programming a Cox Remote

Even though the whole pairing process looks simple enough, there are some pitfalls that everyone falls into.
Identify your remote correctly.
This is important because different models follow different pairing methods.
Although the differences may seem minute, it is that small difference that matters.
Make sure the remote is in TV mode before pairing.
To do this, press the TV key on the remote once.
The key will flash to let you know it is in TV mode.
Enter the correct code.
Making a mistake in the code will result in the pairing process failing, and you need to start the whole process again, the way you’d have to if you Reset your Cox Remote.
Final Thoughts
Cox has quite a few remotes for all their receiver models, and sometimes it is confusing knowing which remote goes where especially when you have multiple Cox boxes.
A universal remote is the answer to this.
Universal remotes with an RF blaster will be able to control all current Cox receiver models.
Some remotes will even support future models through software updates.
Investing here is a good choice if you have multiple remote-bound devices in your living room and want to declutter.
