Things You'll Need

  • Boiled peanuts

  • Airtight containers, or

  • Zipper type freezer bags

Boiled peanuts are primarily a Southern food, but foodies and transplanted Southerners nationwide may find the traditional snack at grocery stores or make them at home. The best boiled peanuts are made from green, or under ripe, nuts, although ripe, mature peanuts can be used also. Stored peanuts have a short shelf life, but with care they can be stored for a longer period of time.

Step 2

Refrigerate boiled peanuts for five to 10 days in airtight containers. Fresh boiled peanuts will store for up to 10 days in the refrigerator, while store-bought nuts may only last for five before the flavor becomes rancid.

Step 3

Place cooled, boiled peanuts in airtight containers or zipper-type freezer bags and freeze until needed. Frozen boiled peanuts remain good indefinitely.

Step 4

Eat the boiled peanuts straight from the refrigerator or allow them to thaw several hours if frozen.

Tip

Green peanuts are boiled in the shell. Create a brine with 10 ounces of salt to 1 gallon of water. Pour over peanuts in a large saucepan or stockpot. Boil for 45 minutes or until the nuts are tender. Leaving the peanuts in the brine after boiling for up to an hour will increase the saltiness of the boiled peanuts.

You can boil shelled, ripe peanuts in your crock pot. Place 1 pound of peanuts in the pot and cover with water. Soak the peanuts overnight and then cook, in the crock pot on low for 8 hours and then for an additional 1-1/2 hours on high. Add up to 5 Tbsp. salt to the water, if desired, during the last half hour of cooking.
