How to Store Tulip Bulbs? Learn How to Store Tulip Bulbs for Beautiful Blooms Next Spring
Tulips are one of the most widely grown fall-planted flower bulbs, justly renowned for their bold color and clean-cut lines. Many gardeners treat them as annuals and discard the bulbs after blooming. However, tulips can also be replanted for another glorious display next spring. Read our guide to find out everything you need to know about how to store tulip bulbs.
How Long Can You Store Tulip Bulbs?
Like most flower bulbs, tulips bulbs can be stored for around 12 months if they are cared for properly. Once you have dug them up, they should be allowed to dry and then stored in a net or bag in a cool dark place. It’s easy to check whether your tulip bulbs are still good - they should feel plump, heavy and firm. If any are withered and dry or soft and rotten, discard them.
How to Store Tulip Bulbs Over Summer
Once the foliage of the tulip has turned yellow and shriveled, dig up the bulbs, clean them and allow them to dry. Then either store hung up in a net or spread them out on a flat tray containing a thin layer of dry sand, moss or vermiculite. Store the tulip bulbs in a cool dry place before replanting in fall.
How to Store Tulip Bulbs Over Winter
If you live in a location with very cold winters or one where your tulips will be subjected to repeated freezing and thawing, it’s advisable to plant your tulips in pots in fall. They can then be stored in a sheltered position such as a porch, garage, or insulated shed over winter, protecting them from the worst of the weather. Move outside once the first shoots appear in spring. You just can't have too many tulips! Now that you know how to store tulip bulbs, browse our tulip collection and discover the latest ravishing color combinations.
