Iced Matcha

  • Made with just 3 ingredients.
  • No fancy matcha tools are needed.
  • A cool, refreshing drink that’s quick and easy to make at home.

What does it mean when you cold brew matcha? It means you’re mixing matcha with cold water. THAT’S IT. This one’s for all you matcha purists out there.

No matcha bowls or whisks needed. The secret to getting smooth, clump-free matcha is shaking water and matcha in an airtight container, like a cocktail shaker or a jar with a tight lid.

I was shocked at how efficient the shaking method worked in creating perfect, cold brew matcha. I’ve always used traditional matcha tools like a bamboo whisk but I’ve been making things harder for myself. This method is far better and quicker.

Note from Jee

i’ve seen iced matcha being sold as “cold brew matcha” and that term is a total eye roller for me. It’s trying to make something simple sound way fancier than it is.

Unlike other teas, because matcha is already powdered, there is no actual cold brewing process. All you need to do is mix matcha and water and that’s the entire method. In that way, this drink is the simplest, easiest matcha drink to make.

Ingredient Notes

  • Matcha: The brighter the green, the more expensive. Find matcha that costs at least $35 for this drink. You can use high quality, expensive matcha for this drink since you’re not diluting it with anything other than ice and water.
  • Water: Use filtered water if possible for a better tasting iced matcha.
  • Ice: Use filtered water to make ice too.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Putting matcha into a cocktail shaker.

Step 1: Into a cocktail shaker, add cold water and a teaspoon of matcha. Shake, shake, shake vigorously for 10-20 seconds.

If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, you can use any jar with a tight lid or a food container with an airtight cover.

Step 3: Add cold water.

Step 4: Pour the shaken matcha from the cocktail shaker into the cup. Watch the matcha green swirl around. Stir before drinking.

Recipe Note

I had first tried making this by shaking all the water and matcha in the cocktail shaker, but using less water in the shaker gave me better results with less clumps. So, I changed the recipe so that there was just a little water in the shaker with matcha and the rest went into the cup with ice.

Pairing Matcha

Matcha is meant to paired with something sweet, so I would recommend drinking your iced matcha with dessert like a slice of cake or sweet mochi. The sugary treat gives the matcha a nice balance.
