Iced Matcha Latte

If you love iced matcha lattes and want to learn how to make them at home so that they turn out perfect each and every time, I got you! As a Tea Sommelier, I’ll give you my tips and tricks to make them even better than your local coffee shop.

Recipe Summary

  • This is a quick and easy recipe that uses 5 ingredients and takes just 5 minutes.
  • There’s no need for special matcha tools. All you need is a small airtight container or a cocktail shaker.
  • I’ll show you the secret to making it layered with milk on the bottom and matcha on top.

Note from Jee

My iced matcha latte looks super impressive but it’s surprisingly easy to make and absolutely delicious. I rarely buy iced matcha lattes at cafes anymore since mine is so much better.

It took me a lot of testing and tasting to master iced matcha lattes but I’m sharing my recipe and all my tips so you can too on your first try!

Ingredient Notes

Matcha green tea latte ingredients.
  • Matcha: The brighter the matcha, the better the quality. Find the brightest green matcha without going over $60. Make sure there’s no sugar added to the matcha.
  • Milk: Any kind of milk can be used, including plant-based. I like using oat milk or whole milk.
  • Cold water: Use filtered water if possible since good quality water makes a better tasting matcha.
  • Honey: Something sweet is the secret to making the drink layered. I’m using honey but you can use simple syrup or sugar.
  • Ice: I recommend using filtered water to make ice.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Milk poured into a cocktail shaker.

Step 1: Put milk and honey in a cocktail shaker. Shake.Make sure to add milk in first.

Ice and milk in a glass cup.

Step 2: Pour sweetened milk into a cup then add ice.The sweetened milk is what creates the layering effect. The sweeter the bottom layer compared to the top layer, the more they’ll separate.

Putting matcha into a cocktail shaker.

Step 3: Rinse the cocktail shaker. Combine water and matcha in the cocktail shaker. Shake.Add water first, then matcha, otherwise the matcha can clump. Any airtight container will work if you don’t have a cocktail shaker, like a jar with a tight lid or a small food storage container with an airtight seal.

Pouring matcha into a cup with ice and milk.

Step 4: Slowly pour shaken matcha into the glass with milk and ice.Pour matcha on top of the ice, not directly into the milk to get a cleaner layered look. Stir before drinking.

Secret to Layering Drinks

The sugar content keeps the layers separated. The liquid that has the most sugar content will sink to the bottom. Honey is added to the milk and poured into the cup first. The matcha doesn’t have any sugar in it so it’ll sit on top of the sweetened milk.

Matcha Notes

The color of the matcha indicates quality. If you pay around $15, the matcha will be a dull, brownish green color. If you spend $50, the matcha will be a bright, vibrant green. For a higher quality iced matcha latte, get matcha that’s in the $30-$50 range.

Matcha tends to clump.Always add the water first before the matcha. It’s important to shake the matcha with water vigorously to break up any clumps.

Use unsweetened matcha.Make sure the matcha you’re using isn’t sweetened since it won’t layer on top of the milk.

No need for a matcha whisk if you shake. It’s easier to shake matcha and water together than whisking cold water into matcha. There’s no need to sift the matcha if you shake vigorously.

Matcha is meant to be had with something sweet.Traditionally, matcha whisked in hot water is served with wagashi, a sweet Japanese confection. So it’s no wonder adding something sweet to an iced matcha latte makes it taste even better.
