ORISKANY, NY (WRGB) — It's the start of the last chapter in the saga of the very expensive NYS clean hand sanitizer that has been hidden away on the outskirts of a state facility in Central New York for months.

Ever since WRGB revealed the state of NY had produced too much of its NYS clean hand sanitizer the state has been unable to say what it would do with all that excess alcohol-laden liquid.

May 18, 2022:Gallons and gallons of hand sanitizer, worth millions, abandoned at former NY airfield

It’s been stored for months on an abandoned runway at the NYS Disaster Preparedness Center in Oriskany.

Last week our cameras captured the initial work in getting rid of the stuff and NYS confirmed for us that it is paying Eastman Kodak $2.32 million to truck the sanitizer to its Eastman Business Park in Rochester. There it will be distilled to remove the isopropyl alcohol which can then be used for manufacturing.

July 21st 2022: Thousands of gallons of unused hand sanitizer, stored on runway in 90 degree heat

As we told you exclusively back in May, NYS spent approximately $4.3 million to make the sanitizer that was never used, bringing the total price tag to $6.62 million for hand sanitizer that wasn’t needed.

September 15th 2022: NYS starts getting rid of clean hand sanitizer stored on runway

Lawmakers from both parties were shocked when we showed them what we had discovered in Oriskany. After our report NYS Senator Joe Griffo wrote to Governor Kathy Hochul’s office with ideas from local colleges and universities about how to dispose of the sanitizer in a safe and cost-effective way. He tells us he never heard back. Former Governor George Pataki seemed stunned when we showed him what we had found.
