Oriskany, N.Y. (WRGB) — Hundreds of thousands of gallons of New York state-produced hand sanitizer that you paid for, will now be recycled!
The New York State Office of General Services has entered into a contract with the Eastman Kodak company to remove and dispose of the 'New York State Clean' product, now that the pandemic has eased, and it can't even be given away!
MORE:Thousands of gallons of unused hand sanitizer, stored on runway in 90 degree heat
This is a development that's been months in the making.
We broke the story with a "You Paid For It" report on this stockpile all the way back in May.
The more than 700,000 gallons of unused and expired hand sanitizer was being kept under blue tarps on an old airport runway at the state training preparedness center in Central New York. It cost NYS approximately 4.3 million dollars to manufacture the sanitizer that was never used.
Eastman Kodak started its work this week. The state estimates the process will take about 44 weeks to complete.
MORE:Gallons and gallons of hand sanitizer, worth millions, abandoned at former NY airfield
The state said the company will distill the sanitizer, to extract the alcohol for reuse in manufacturing. We are still working to learn how much this disposal process will cost taxpayers.
