Li Lianjie was born April 26, 1963, better known by his stage name Jet Li, is a retired Chinese film actor, film producer, martial artist, and Wushu Champion. He is a naturalized Singaporean citizen.

After three years of training with renowned Wushu teacher Wu Bin, Li won his first national championship for the Beijing Wushu team. After retiring from the Wushu competition at the age of 19, he achieved great success in China as an actor, making his debut with the film Shaolin Temple (1982). He went on to star in many critically acclaimed epic martial arts films, most notably as the main character in Zhang Yimou’s Hero (2002), Fist of Legend (1994) and the first three films in the Once Upon a series. Time in China (1991 –1993), in which he plays the popular hero Wong Fei-hung.

Li’s first role in a non-Chinese movie was as a villain in Lethal Weapon 4 (1998), and his first lead role in a Hollywood movie was as Han Sing in Romeo Must Die (2000). He then appeared in numerous international action films, notably in French cinema with films produced by Luc Besson Le Baiser du Dragon (2001) and Déchaîné (2005). He starred in The One (2001) and War (2007) with Jason Statham, The Forbidden Kingdom (2008) with Jackie Chan, the three The Expendables films with Sylvester Stallone, and as the main villain character in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).

Li is a practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism. His teacher is Lho Kunsang. Li was nominated by the Chinese Wushu Association as “Wushu Image Ambassador” at the 2007 Wushu World Championships in Beijing.

In 1987, Li married Shaolin co-star Beijing Wushu and Kids team member Huang Qiuyan, with whom he has two daughters, Si and Taimi. They divorced in 1990. In 1999, Li married Nina Li Chi (née Li Zhi), an actress born in Shanghai and based in Hong Kong. He has two daughters with her, Jane (born 2000) and Jada (born 2002).

In 2009, he started his own fitness program, Wuji. The program includes elements of martial arts, yoga and Pilates; Adidas has launched a special clothing line for her which bears the initials of “JL”. In his spare time he enjoys playing badminton and table tennis, cycling, reading and meditating. He collects rare Tibetan pearls. He says he never gets bored in his free time.
