Takis have their own cult following. People who love them really love them. I had to make a version for anyone missing their favorite spicy snack. I used a similar recipe to my corn chips and Doritos and made these crunchy, rolled chips!

There are different Taki flavors out there, but I’m tackling Fuego today because it’s the most popular. Using my base tortilla chip recipe, I roll the dough into tubes then fry them in avocado oil. The Fuego seasoning took some experimenting to match.

Fuego Takis are spicy from a blend of chile peppers (not just chili powder) with a sweet, tangy lime note. For the chile flavor, I use chili powder, cayenne, and habanero powder. For that lime tang, I use a small amount of a sugar-free citrus drink powder instead of lime juice (which would make the chips soggy). It’s an electrolyte powder, so it adds salt that enhances the overall flavor.

How to make takis

  1. Make rolled chips. Combine almond flour, unflavored protein powder, xanthan gum and salt. Roll very thin. Punch out small circles. Roll into tubes.
  2. Fry the chips in avocado oil until golden.
  3. Make Takis seasoning by combining chili powder, lime drink powder, powdered cayenne pepper, habanero pepper powder and garlic powder.
  4. Dust homemade Takis in the seasoning by adding to a ziploc bag or bowl and toss the rolled chips in the Taki seasoning.

Step by Step Instructions

1 Make dough for rolled chips

In a medium bowl, combine almond flour, unflavored protein powder, xanthan gum and salt. Stir to combine. Pour in hot water and mix until dough forms.

chip dough on a sheet of parchment paper
Tip You might need to knead with your hands to fully mix the dough.
2 Roll out dough into a thin sheet

Place dough in between two sheets of parchment paper. Roll out in all directions using a rolling pin, forming a rectangle shape, until the dough is very thin. The thinner the dough, the crispier the homemade Takis.

Tip To easily keep the dough from sticking to the parchment paper, carefully peel away the top parchment paper. Then replace and flip over. Then remove the new parchment paper on top. Now the dough will remove easily when you punch out the circle shapes
3 Punch out circles and roll

Using a small biscuit cutter or the rim of a cup, punch out small circles from the dough and roll each circle to form a tube. Repeat with remaining dough.

4 Fry rolled chips

Add enough avocado oil to a skillet to submerge each rolled chip. Heat over medium heat. Once oil is hot, add rolled chips and fry until they start to turn golden. Remove using a spotted spatula and transfer to a paper towel lined plate to dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I substitute almond flour with another type of flour?

Almond flour works best here. You can try coconut flour, but you'll need to add more water since coconut flour absorbs a lot more moisture.

How can I make these chips less spicy?

To tone down the heat, you can reduce the amounts of chili powder, cayenne pepper, and habanero powder. You can also omit the habanero powder completely if you prefer a milder flavor.

What is the best way to store leftover keto takis?

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Don't refrigerate them because the moisture makes them lose their crunch.

Can I bake these instead of frying?

Yes, you can bake them! Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and place the rolled chips on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for about 10-12 minutes or until they are crispy and golden brown.

Are these keto takis suitable for meal prep?

Yes! Make the dough ahead and roll out the chips when you're ready to fry. Just store the dough in the fridge, tightly wrapped.

Ways to use takis or the seasoning

Besides just enjoying a handful of Takis as a snack, this favorite rolled corn chip is used for other recipes. These were made popular on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Here are some different ways people are using takis:
  • Taki Chicken: Crush up bag of Fuego Takis and use the crumbs as a coating for fried chicken.
  • Taki Flavored Mozzarella Sticks: Make homemade mozzarella sticks with string cheese, egg wash and crushed takis for the coating.
  • Taki Salad: Add crushed takis on top of your favorite salad for crunch and spice.

These are the Best snack ever! I got tired of rolling them and just made chips. Also, I added 15 drops of corn extract flavoring. My husband said "this is the best cracker/chip recipe you've made so far". I was thinking about making a batch and cutting them out, then freezing them. That way I'd be able to just cook em up in a jiffy when I wanted. Thank you for sharing your recipe.

LOL! That's the beauty of this recipe. It is "cleaner" and doesn't require any added junk for flavoring. These are just as delicious.
