Why some people NEVER get a hangover?
We all know how terrible hangovers can feel. But what if we tell you there are some people who never get a hangover. The next morning after a boozy party when feel like someone is drilling through your skull, your friend might be getting ready for a run. But how does that happen?
It’s actually true that some people never get a hangover, no matter how much alcohol they drink. We all want to be them. While that is far from reality, here we reveal the secret why that happens.
First let’s discuss what causes a hangover.
2/10
What causes a hangover?
The alcohol you drink is broken by your liver enzymes into acetaldehyde, a toxin that your body needs to get rid of quickly. The liver enzymes that break down the alcohol are more effective in some people than others. For people who get hangovers, which means most of us, these enzymes are not as effective.

What happens when you are hungover?
When the acetaldehyde (the toxins) hang for longer in your body, it leads to dry mouth, headache, dizziness, bad nausea – in short, what we call a hangover.
4/10
Why some people don’t get a hangover?
Genetics have a major role to play here. Their body is able to break down and get rid of the by-products of alcohol easily - metabolically and genetically. Thus, it doesn’t affect them the next morning.

Study
Research conducted in 2014 on 4,000 people from Australia’s Twin Registry found out that genetic factors account for 45 per cent difference in hangover frequency in women and 40 per cent in men.

Other things at play
Alcohol is diuretic (makes you pee). So, dehydration also plays a big role in a hangover. This happens because when people drink, they often forget to rehydrate themselves. That is why experts recommend having as much water as possible when you drink alcohol. The general thumb rule is one glass of water for every glass of alcohol.
7/10
Quantity also matters
Some people are smarter than others, they pay attention to the quantity they are consuming. According to a 2015 study presented at the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology, people who never had hangovers simply had less quantity as compared to their counterparts.
8/10
Women have a severe hangover
It’s possible that women can get hit harder by hangovers. This happens because women metabolize alcohol differently than men and are more sensitive to it.
9/10
What you need to know if you don’t get a hangover
Even if you don’t get a hangover, it doesn’t give you the license of pouring one glass after the other. Alcohol is a toxin and overdoing is never a good idea.

Tips for people who get hangovers
- Make sure you keep yourself hydrated
- Have coconut water
- Do not eat greasy food with alcohol
- Opt for a fruit smoothie the next morning
