Lets Get Lit - Alixenglish101

When I think back to the last year of my life and tried to remember which word I heard from people the most, I thought of “lit”. Almost every kid and teenager use this word, but what does it mean? Most of the time “getting lit” means that you are going to a party to get very drunk. Another way people use the word is to simply describe that they will, are, or had a really fun time at what they were doing.
I believe that this word is so commonly used because it has more than one meaning. Most of the younger kids use it to explain they had a fun time somewhere, but wanted to sound “cool” around their friends so they stuck “lit” in their story a few times. Some older teenagers use it as saying that they did, or are about to get drunk. Why don’t kids just say “I’m going to get drunk!”? Well, an obvious reason is, most people that are using this slang word, aren’t old enough to drink. When they say “lit”, it doesn’t actually sound like they are talking about drinking at all. To older adults when someone says “lit” they ignore it because they don’t know what it means, or if they do, they are most likely thinking they are talking about lighting a candle. If they were to hear a kid say “I’m getting drunk”, that’s when kids start getting grounded. I think that using this word helps kids stay out of trouble with their parents, but also is a way to tell their friends that they are getting hammered.
I’m not the only person that knows how much “lit” has been used. This one word has been said and written on the internet and social media so many times that it can be found in the Urban Dictionary. An example that the dictionary gave of the word being used was, “John: Did you go that party last night? Daquan: Yes, that shit was lit.” Almost every high school student in 2016-2017, has said these exact words at least once.
In my opinion, “lit” has been used far too many times. I understand that it’s a cover up word, and that most kids are just trying to explain how crazy the party was that they went to, but enough is enough. Not only are people using it to say they got black out drunk, but they are basically using the word to describe something that they had a sliver of interest in. I could walk down the street and see a guy jump off a two foot wall, land it, and he would say “that was so lit!”. Using the word that much, I think, brings down the power, or the coolness of the word.
Although it has found a place in the urban dictionary, “lit” will only stick around for so long. Teenagers get bored of slang words incredibly quick, and in the next few months, there will be a new word to replace “lit”, and explain how plastered someone got at a party. Slang words is all young adults use, and “lit” was just lucky enough to get put in the spot of explaining and drunk and crazy someone was at a party.
