Mariano Guzmán is a minor character in Disney's 2021 animated feature film Encanto. He is Isabela's former fiancé, the boyfriend of Dolores, and the son of Señora Guzmán.

Physical appearance[]

Mariano is a tanned muscular man who has short brown hair with side-swept bangs and hazel eyes. He also has a light beard and mustache and wears a white, striped guayabera which accentuates his masculinity. He also dons brown long pants with light brown flats.

Personality[]

He is noted to be a quite lovey-dovey, generous and sometimes shy man while showing a lot of empathic qualities too, as even after Isabela broke his nose twice, he has absolutely nothing against her; as he and his mother rally the townspeople to help rebuild the Casita and himself notes that he has "so much love inside".

He formerly was in love with Isabela, mainly for her 'perfect' facade. However, after he meets Dolores, he is immediately smitten and does shock Dolores with his overzealous love. This all hints towards his empathetic and lovey nature.

Relationships[]

• Isabela Madrigal: He loved Isabela a lot, however not realizing she does not truly hold the same affections for him. However even when Isabela breaks his nose twice (albeit inadvertently), he still is very willing to care for both her and the rest of her family. Later on it is assumed they have a good relationship as Isabela and Mirabel match-make him and Dolores.

• Mirabel Madrigal: She previously merely saw him as a "big dumb hunk" but after she and Isabela fix their misunderstanding and the Casita is being rebuilt during All Of You, both Mirabel and Mariano seem to hold no bad blood despite the ruined proposal dinner as she keenly introduces him to Dolores, who loves him just the same, which shows both Mariano and Mirabel's forgiving and empathetic natures.

• Dolores Madrigal: He originally merely saw Dolores as his soon-to-be cousin in law but later on when he realizes Dolores' feelings for him, he is smitten and they get in a relationship. He shows no fear in outwardly displaying his huge amount of love and affection he has stored up in him, which Dolores quickly tells him to "slow down" and calm down, showing the two's healthy relationship dynamic.

At the preparty of Antonio's gift ceremony, Mariano is seen in La Casa Madrigal along with Señora Guzmán. Her mother helped push some hair that fell out while he was lovingly eyeing Isabela, who was dancing with some of the townspeople. Mariano is later briefly seen dancing and talking to Isabela at the afterparty.

During the dinner, Mariano shows concern for Mirabel, who was trying to hide Bruno’s vision. However, Mirabel just rushes the proposal, trying not to do anything that seems suspicious. At the moment Mariano tries to propose to Isabela, everything goes wrong. Isabela gets shocked, and conjures a plant that hits Mariano's nose hard. Everyone else is rivaled up by the fact that Mirabel broke into Bruno's tower for the vision, especially Pepa, who starts thundering.

Like everyone else, Mariano is surprised when Dolores tells everyone that Mirabel broke into Bruno's tower, stole his vision, and that they 'all are doomed.' At that moment, the tray holding Bruno's vision gets pushed onto the table, and the cracks start growing bigger and more visible. At that moment, the door opens to reveal the townspeople, who were getting ready to celebrate Isabela and Mariano's engagement, to find that the dinner ended in chaos.

Mariano then proceeds to exit the house with Señora Guzmán, holding his nose in agony.

When Isabela reveals she was never interested in Mariano, it's immediately clear these two will never be wed. While the town is rebuilding Casita, Mirabel notices that Mariano looks down. He tells her that '(he) just has so much love inside,' referring to his break-up with Isabela. Mirabel then decides to introduce him to Dolores.

Dolores was already interested in Mariano, but Bruno predicted that he would be 'betrothed to another', referring to Isabela. Now that Mariano was not getting married to Isabela, Dolores could be with him. She explained to him that she always liked him, but he never noticed her. When Mariano truly noticed her, he realized what an amazing person she is. He immediately gets excited and smitten, and wants to marry her, but Dolores tells him to 'slow down', showing their healthy relationship.

• His name is a form of Mary, which pairs with both Isabela and Dolores' names to create a Marian theme. Isabela is a form of Elizabeth, the cousin of Mary, and Dolores (meaning "sorrow") is a title of Mary.
• The script makes it unclear whether Señora Guzmán is intended to be Mariano's mother or grandmother. In the script, she is called "Abuela Guzmán", which could mean she was originally going to be Mariano's grandmother.
• According to the Encanto Deluxe Junior Novel, Mariano and Dolores do eventually get married.
