Market Basket Opens Its First Rhode Island Store In Warwick - WJAR

(WJAR) — Consumer Reports says it's "the top supermarket in the Northeast" for a whole host of reasons.

And now, Market Basket is opening its first Rhode Island store, in Warwick.

It's 85th under that brand.

Athanasios and Efrosini Demoulas, Greek immigrants, opened their first market in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1917.

Through extended family growth and expansion, this first Rhode Island Market Basket, now in 2021, is the 89th in the chain for the private company, which includes four of the original DeMoulas markets.

What sets apart Market Basket from other supermarkets: staying true to its core values, says David McLean, Market Basket manager.

“Arthur T. Demoulas has said ‘we're all equal, and as long as everyone is fair, whether you're the provider, the distributor, the customer, the company, the associates, Uncle Sam, then we can all share,'" McLean said.

The 89,000-square-foot supermarket was built just off Route 2 in Warwick where an At Home store was previously located.

It will have 350 new employees and 60 existing ones who transferred from other locations.

Its mission: to cater to the shopper's every need.

There's a cafe, fresh-cut sushi, and vegetables, a multi-oven in-store bakery, one of the few certified Angus beef retailers, the deli, all with huge saving versus competitors, according to Consumer's Checkbook.

“To have honest pricing, no gimmicks, to give tremendous value to the consumer,” McLean said.

Market Basket localizes each of its stores, from baking items to iconic favorites, to local seafood that arrives every day.

There’s no self-checkout and 50,000 store-brand and name-brand items to choose from.

A shopping experience not to be missed, store officials said.

McLean sums up the company and what consumers can expect by saying, “We all rise, and we all fall together. And that's been the premise: it's people taking care of people.”

The second Market Basket in Rhode Island, in Johnston, will be the 90th for the company. The store is expected to open in late August or early September.
