USAMP U What is the proper way to measure the front and rear sight? I had thought it would be as follows: Front- top of the slide to top of the blade Rear- Top of the slide to the top of the notch is this right? Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Apr 4, 2012 Correct for the front. For the rear it is from the bottom of the GI style dovetail. Standard is generally .325". #3 · Apr 4, 2012 The front sight measurement is correct and is probably the only height spec. you'll consistently find when shopping for sights. What most folks do is settle on a rear sight and then settle on the load and range they want to zero the gun to. Then, they put on an old/cheap front sight of known height, see how far off they are from zero and calculate the correct front sight height using this method #4 · Apr 4, 2012 I forgot to mention both sides are dove tailed. I still figure its the top of the slide or dove tail though. If you buy matching front and rear will the point of impact be the point of aim. Its been so long since I have thought handgun sights that I cant remember how I arrived at the sights I did. The front measures .236 The rear measures .310 These are just white three dot sights, would like to replace the rear with a Novack style #5 · Apr 4, 2012 USAMP, Give Novaks a call. Let them know the gun details, and the ammo you are going to use. They'll get you the correct front sight height recommendation. It worked for me. Craig #6 · Apr 4, 2012 Assuming that front sight blade measurement is from the top of the slide/dovetail as you mentioned, and it is a 5" gun, I believe that front sight is a little tall and will shoot low. Typically the fronts are somewhere in the .190 - .210" range for that rear sight height, assuming GI dovetail depth on the slide. Placement of the rear notch and the lockup and load will effect the POA/POI #7 · Apr 4, 2012 .310 for the rear measurement sounds reasonable. Is the .236 front sight measured from the top of the slide or from the bottom of the dovetail? Most front sights will be between .160 and .190 measured from the top of the slide. #8 · Apr 4, 2012 Ok just the blade of the fron site is .179 from the dove tail is .236 its a 5'' Spring field and if I line up the dots POA is right on if I due my part When I bought it new, the sights were to tall If I remember right. I had the dove tail cut and bought the new front blade. 0 Reply #9 · Apr 4, 2012 That sounds very normal. I just measured a few sights off of Colt 1991s. The fronts are .180 and the rear are between .317 and .322. #10 · Apr 5, 2012 so how much dif. would there be if I just put a Novak rear sight on? #11 · Apr 5, 2012 There should be very little difference. After machining for the Novak rear sight, the top of the blade will be very close to .325 above the bottom of the GI dovetail. If your current sight is .310 from the bottom of the dovetail the Novak might shoot about 2 inches higher at 25 yards. Insert Quotes Post Reply
