Michael Buffer is best known for his “Let’s get ready to rumble” catchphrase, but before that, he was a member of the U.S. Army. After enlisting at the age of 20 during the Vietnam War, he served until he was 23 and then held various odd jobs. At one point, he was a car salesman, and at age 32, he started a brief modeling career before becoming a ring announcer. While it began as a small-time gig, Buffer ultimately worked with some of the richest boxers in the world as his career progressed.

The World Of Boxing

Michael Buffer started his career as a ring announcer in 1982, and by the following year, he was working for Top Rank on ESPN. This introduced him to a national audience, and in 1984, he developed his signature catchphrase, “Let’s get ready to rumble!” Not long after, thanks to the phrase’s popularity, Buffer started the process of obtaining a trademark for it, which he acquired in 1992. Since earning that trademark, Michael Buffer has become extremely wealthy, earning over $400 million in licensing fees alone.

By the late ‘80s, he had become the official announcer for all boxing matches held in Donald Trump-owned casinos. In 2018, Buffer signed with DAZN, a British sports streaming platform, to be the exclusive ring announcer for their boxing broadcasts.

The World Of Wrestling

Along with announcing boxing matches, Michael Buffer has also been an announcer for World Championship Wrestling. Until 2001, he was the exclusive announcer for WCW events featuring Hulk Hogan, until the organization went under. However, this exclusive contract meant he couldn’t announce to any other wrestling organization. Once WCW shut down, Buffer could announce other programs, including WCW Monday Nitro with Triple H and his D-Generation X gimmick.

In 2007, he announced at Madison Square Garden for Saturday Night’s Main Event XXXV, which saw Evander Holyfield take on Matt Hardy.

Additional Events

Outside of boxing and wrestling, Michael Buffer has announced for several other sports, including the MLB World Series and Stanley Cup Finals. He has also announced at the NBA Finals, the Volunteer 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway, and various NFL playoff games.

In 2008, Buffer was an announcer at the Affliction: Banned Martial Arts show and the World Series of Poker. Buffer announced for NBC’s Sunday Night Football matchup against two of the richest NFL teams, the Rams and the Bears. Soon after, he announced at the Rams’ first home playoff game in 2022 and the NFC Championship against the 49ers.

He has also appeared on many talk shows, NBC’s Deal or No Deal game show in 2007, and the seventh season of American Idol. Buffer has even appeared in animated form on The Simpsons, South Park, Phineas and Ferb, and Celebrity Deathmatch. Along with all of this, Buffer has starred in many Progressive Insurance commercials, parodying his catchphrase, “Let’s get ready to bundle!”
