Faced with the ongoing growth of smartphone ownership, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has begun the process of adding 263 as an additional area code for the island of Montreal.

In a statement made public Friday, the CRTC noted that the existing area codes “are projected to exhaust by 2024.”

The federal regulatory body also determined that while the deadline is farther away (March 2025), those areas of western Quebec covered by the 819 and 873 area codes will see 468 added to the regional repertoire to respond to the increased number of phones.
