Area code 263 will be used in Montreal in the zone covered by 514 and 438. The 354 area code will be introduced in the region around Montreal Island served by 450 and 579. The 468 area code will be used in the area served by 819 and 873.

Alliance des télécommunicateurs spokesperson Lucie Papineau-Pugliese said in a statement that the three new area codes will make available millions of additional phone numbers without affecting existing numbers.

The new codes will not affect how long-distance calls are made or the use of such service numbers as 211, 311, 411, 611 and 911.

The new area codes are an indication of the acceleration of the demand in Quebec for telecommunications services — particularly wireless services — and the additional phone numbers that demand requires. The 514 area code for Montreal was introduced in 1947 and the 819 area code for western and central Quebec introduced in 1957.

The 450 area code was adopted in 1998 for the area surrounding Montreal Island. The 438 area code was added to the 514 zone in 2006, and 579 was added to the 450 region in 2010. The 873 area code was added to the 819 zone in 2012.
