Our Corned Beef Hash recipe was originally published on 24/03/2020. It was modified on 27/06/2024 with a simpler layout to make getting to the recipe card easier and improved advice.

Ingredients

Let's start with the ingredients you will need for our delicious recipe.

While certain ingredients require no explanation, I will provide more specific advice and appropriate alternatives below.

  • Potatoes - Versatile choice. Use white, russet, red, or sweet potatoes for different flavours and textures. Tinned potatoes are convenient—just dice before adding.
  • Corned Beef - Canned corned beef is pre-cooked and available in supermarkets. Fry it to enhance flavour. For best results, avoid home-cooked or deli-counter corned beef.
  • Eggs - Cooked in the oven for a firm yolk. For a soft yolk, fry the eggs separately while the hash bakes.

Optional Extras

Why not get creative with your corned beef hash? Explore the possibilities of adding fresh sliced chillies, garlic powder, a medley of mixed herbs, or even a splash of hot sauce for an extra kick of flavour. The choice is yours to elevate this classic dish to new levels of deliciousness!

Equipment

Let us list the equipment needed.

  • Cast Iron Pan
  • Spatula
  • Sharp Knife

When cooking corned beef hash a good knife is essential for chopping your onions and potatoes, while a sturdy spatula will help you flip and stir your ingredients without them sticking to the pan.

Now, let's talk about the star of this recipe—our versatile cast iron pan. It can seamlessly transition from hob to oven, making it perfect for cooking dishes like corned beef hash, which requires hob frying and oven baking.

If you don't have a cast iron pan, don't fret! Any oven-friendly pan will suffice. Or you can start in a pan and transfer to a preheated oven dish for the last step.

Instructions

We will guide you through how to cook corned beef hash.

Preparation

Start by preheating your oven to 200℃ fan / 220°C / 425℉ / Gas Mark 7 . While it's heating up, peel and dice your potatoes. If you're using canned potatoes, you can skip this step.

Next, cut your canned corned beef into cubes. Don't worry too much about perfecting the cubes – they'll break apart while cooking. Set your cubed potatoes and corned beef aside for now.

Crush, dice, or mince the garlic and dice the onion.

Boil

Place the diced potatoes into a pan of boiling water to cook, they should take about 7 minutes. Drain and allow the boiled potatoes to air dry.

Fry

Grab a large, oven-safe pan (a cast iron one works great) and heat some olive oil in it.

Gently fry the onion in the oil until it's soft. This should take around 5 minutes.
