directions

  • Boil water.
  • Mix in ordinary white granulated sugar.
  • Stir and allow the mixture to cool.
  • When the nectar is room temperature, fill your clean oriole feeder.
  • Tips: This is 6 parts water to 1 part sugar.
  • Never use dyes or food coloring, as they are not healthy for hummingbirds or orioles.
  • Never use honey when making your nectar mix. Honey attracts bees and can grow black fungus that will cause a fatal liver and tongue disease in hummingbirds.
  • Replace the nectar once every three to four days and clean the feeder thoroughly.
  • Unused nectar can be refrigerated for up to two weeks.
  • You will need to clean your feeder every few days, with hot water and a mild (10%) bleach solution to inhibit mold. Rinse thoroughly before refilling with water syrup.

  1. This is the right recipe! Orioles and Hummingbirds to not need any extra vitamins or nutrients, that comes in their natural diet. Sugar water helps them a lot. Let them get their own vitamins and nutrients in the insects and flower nectar the feed on. Also, do not add any coloring! It's bad for them. The bright colors on your nectar feeder is penty to attract these beautiful birds! Happy birding.   icons / ellipsis / ellipsis-horizontal jack.kinney.photogra Reply 3
  2. Typical oriole recipe that doesn't need to be changed or have anything else added. Please disregard the other reviews. Oriole and hummingbird nectar is supposed to be just sugar water. It doesn't need "orange flavor" or "vitamins and minerals". The sugar/water ratio should NOT be changed, this ratio is based on the birds' system. Too little sugar, it's not nutritious. Too much and it dehydrates them.   icons / ellipsis / ellipsis-horizontal Osha W. Reply 2
  3. Orioles and Hummingbirds are happy! This is the female oriole. The orioles prefer an orange sliced in half early in the spring and then will favour the feeder after about a month in my area.

  4. I did not know that orioles just drank sugar water--I thought they needed orange flavoring. I also make my hummingbird nectar but use 1/2 c. ORGANIC sugar and 2 c. of filtered or real spring water. No need to be feeding these beautiful birds anything genetically modified or with chlorine and fluoride in it.   icons / ellipsis / ellipsis-horizontal Anonymous Reply See 1 Reply
  5. This will attract the orioles and they are beautiful birds...although I use a 1/2 cup sugar to 2 cups boiling water, makes it just a little sweeter for them :-)   icons / ellipsis / ellipsis-horizontal Chris H Reply See 2 Replies
