Expert Tips

  • Best potatoes for steak fries: Our favorite potatoes to use are Yukon gold. The best part of Yukon gold potatoes is the taste and the thin outer skin. Yukon gold’s thin skin is ideal for those who like a fry with the skin left on.
  • How to pick the right potatoes: You first want to give the potatoes a little squeeze. You want to be sure that there is no give and the potatoes are firm. Soft potatoes are not as good! Although soft potatoes aren’t bad to eat, we recommend crisp, firm potatoes for better flavor and texture when cooking.
  • How to cut potatoes: Start with a raw whole potato that has been scrubbed clean and patted dry. Place potatoes on their side lengthwise and cut into three large, long sections. Slice each section lengthwise into steak fries, about ¼ inch thick and 4-5 inches long (the length will depend on the length of your potato).
  • Do I need to use cold water? When making these crispy steak fries it is not required to soak them in cold water. But you will want to make sure you rinse the whole potatoes before you make the thick cut oven fries to get that nice crispy outer layer when you apply the vegetable oil.
  • Best dipping sauces for homemade fries: I am not sure that I have a favorite dipping sauce, maybe more like favorite sauces. I can always go for the classic ketchup option with a good steak fry. Garlic aioli is a tasty sauce that you can at the grocery store and is delicious with baked steak fries. Fry sauce (aka ketchup and mayo) or honey mustard are other popular choices.

Storage Instructions

The best crispy perfection version of steak fries is best when enjoyed fresh. However, you can store them in an airtight container and store them in the fridge to eat the next day for an easy side dish. I would suggest warming them up in the air fryer to try your best to keep the delicious fries crispy. You can even spay them with a little more cooking spray when you air fry them, but don’t overdo it or they will become soggy.
