Plagg[17] is one of the four deuteragonists (alongside Tikki, Alya Césaire and Nino Lahiffe) of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir. He is the kwami of Destruction who is connected to the Cat Miraculous.[18][19] With his power, Plagg's wearer can use the ring to transform into a black cat-themed superhero.

Plagg and his Miraculous are currently active and owned by Adrien Agreste, who uses it to transform into the superhero Cat Noir.

In an alternate universe, Plagg and his Miraculous are active, being owned by Adrien, who uses it to transform into Furry Paw. Previously, he used it to transform into the supervillain Claw Noir, before being reformed by his counterpart and join Betterfly against the Supreme.

In another universe, Plagg and his Miraculous are active, being owned by Zoé Lee, who uses it to transform into the superheroine Kitty Noire. And, in another universe, Plagg and his Miraculous are owned by Marinette Dupain-Cheng, who uses it to transform into the superheroine Lady Noire.

Appearance[]

Plagg is a small 10 centimeter (or 4 inch)[10] tall kwami resembling that of a black cat. He has a small torso and small limbs, black fur, green eyes, cat-like ears, a small, dark blue whisker on his forehead and one dark blue whisker on both of his cheeks. The inside of his mouth is purple with two cat-like incisors.

In his true form, Plagg is of gargantuan size. He's significantly more humanoid in this form as opposed to his usual appearance. Plagg has a humanoid body with 3 pairs of arms that end in four-fingered hands with no visible digits and clawed fingers, 3 pairs of bat-like wings, and long legs that taper towards the end in small, pointed feet. He gains an additional third vertical-oriented eye in the middle of his forehead. His whiskers also get much longer, and he gets double tails that intertwine around his legs and end around the bottom of his feet. Plagg has a massive hole in his chest area, and gashes and cracks all over his body. At his shoulder, forearm, and wrist joints, as well at directly above and bellow his knees, the gashes are so deep they completely sever his body parts away, yet they are able to stay connected and float around, enabling Plagg to use his limbs normally in spite of that, seemingly not hindering him at all. At the inside the hole, and on all the cracks, gashes, and severed body parts, it's possible to see the inside of Plagg's body, colored neon green, Moreover, there's neon green electricity crackling all over his form, as well as a green glow all around him.

Plagg's alternate universe counterpart is identical in appareance but with the only difference of having a red and black seal on his mouth put by the Supreme which prevents him from talking.

Personality[]

At his best, Plagg can be described as being carefree and easygoing. At his worst, he is negligent, overindulgent, lazy, and sour. He isn't very helpful and doesn't take situations quite as seriously as he should.[20] According to Adrien, he is out of control and arrogant. According to Master Fu, Plagg is reckless and rebellious without the guidance of an owner, and when he disobeyed Master Fu's order to stay put. Like Adrien, when he is Cat Noir, Plagg is serious with his abilities. With him learning time and time again with great power comes great responsibility and when making a mistake one doesn't give up and run away instead one stands up and tries to fix it as in "Miraculous New York Special".

He calls himself brave and a free-spirit. Unlike Adrien, he doesn't mind being cooped up and is willing to look on the brighter side of things.[21]

Often making bad choices, Plagg can be quite troublesome, like playing with Chloé Bourgeois's bracelet and causing an argument about it being stolen in Miss Bustier's class after it gets stuck on his head. He seems to find others' misfortunes amusing, especially Adrien's, along with the dirty secrets that they keep. He can be quite curious at times when he flew off into Chloé's bag, wanting to see who Ladybug really was, or know what was in Gabriel's safe. Plagg is snarky and can be a bit of a prankster at times, often making sarcastic comments and enjoyed playing the piano with Adrien, as well as playing with one of the wax figurine heads. He also doesn't want Adrien transforms into Cat Noir in fun situations. Like in "The Bubbler" when Adrien wanted to transform, Plagg said no and told him to enjoy the party that the Bubbler made for Adrien.

However, Plagg will be serious if the situation requires him to. He tried to stop Adrien from transforming as he hadn't finished explaining everything about the Cat Miraculous and thinks Adrien's idea to talk Volpina out of causing harm isn't as useful as being Cat Noir.

Outside of his easygoing personality, Plagg can be cool, calm, collected, focused, encouraging to others, and sometimes kind like Tikki. He isn't afraid to speak his mind when something is a bad idea like when Adrien took Ladybug's offer accepting the Snake Miraculous especially when his owner kept being distracted. Yet, unlike Tikki, Plagg is more secretive towards his holder, refusing to tell any secrets about Master Fu to him. Unlike Adrien, he is more cautious around those who are suspicious or sneaky and, like Trixx, is a good judge of character as he described Lila Rossi as not a good friend for Adrien.

Quite the picky eater, Plagg only enjoys eating cheese, especially camembert, which Adrien will feed him not only to fuel his transformation into Cat Noir, but also to bribe him when he isn't being helpful. He will also get distracted by anything that resembles Camembert, including the objects around Adrien's room during his first time there and Chloé's bracelet. Also, according to Adrien, due to his obsession with cheese, Plagg has a bit of a one-track mind with Adrien believing, "You're always thinking with your stomach". His obsession with cheese led him and Tikki to be seen by Olga Mendeleiev and the latter's akumatization.

Plagg displays a clever side, planning with Tikki and Wayzz to contact Nooroo while being aware of the Akumas (though this plan ended up failing) and tricking Sandboy into the path of an upcoming subway train when the villain was chasing him.

Plagg knows how to play the piano. Due to his obsession with cheese, he is very knowledgeable about different types of cheese and cheesemaking, and also knows how to mature them.[22]

As a Kwami[]

Plagg can fly and levitate. His speed is enough to surpass Sandboy's transportation. Plagg can also pass through solid objects, like when he phases through Gabriel Agreste's safe to get inside and unlock it for Adrien. Despite being small, Plagg can carry objects larger or heavier than him, such as a large slice of camembert or a TV remote.

Plagg is connected to the Cat Miraculous, and can transform his Miraculous's wielder into a black cat-themed superhero or supervillain and grant them the power of destruction, which requires the wielder to say the following transformation phrase: "Plagg, claws out!". For the wielder of the Cat Miraculous to revert back to normal, they must say "claws in". Plagg is aware of what goes on when the wielder of his Miraculous is transformed, but is unable to communicate with them for the duration of the transformation. Like all Kwamis, when the user of the Cat Miraculous uses their superpower, they will transform back to normal, and to transform back, Plagg will need to eat something to reclaim his energy.

Plagg's superpower is Cataclysm, which allows him to destroy anything he touches and oftentimes, reduce what he touches to ashes. It is capable of causing untold destruction to the point where, according to Wang Fu, by using Cataclysm, Plagg was responsible for causing the Leaning Tower of Pisa to tilt on its side (hence its name), the sinking of Atlantis and most notably, the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs[23] and dragons. In "Style Queen", Plagg was able to cause widespread destruction around Paris merely by lightly touching the Eiffel Tower with Cataclysm activated.

In "Catalyst", it was shown that he can destroy or decay the ground using his breath, making Gorizilla fall through the ground. It is unknown whether this ability is considered as Cataclysm.

However, as stated by Tikki, his control over his power is rather limited and may cause significant damage than necessary if he did so against more durable materials like Kwamibuster's canister. When Plagg said, "I didn't use Cataclysm I swear" in "Stormy Weather 2", it's implied that his powers are strong enough to make a volcano erupt and cause other natural disasters or he caused a volcano eruption in the past.

There were rare incidents where Tikki would go crazy through her sweet tooth, causing her to use her powers to satisfy her hunger, and, due to the dangers, it would cause and the imbalance to the world Plagg's were always used to stop Tikki's from going overboard.

Since kwamis give their owners the abilities of the jewels; for example when Adrien is Cat Noir, he can see in the dark which implies that Plagg has night vision too when he isn't fused with Adrien.

When fed the correct potion, Plagg can access different forms and provide his holder additional abilities:

• With the water potion, Plagg's form is known as "Aqua Plagg". He grants his holder the ability to breathe underwater and additional parts to their suit, such as flippers.
• When fed the ice potion, Plagg can access a form known as "Plagg Glacier". He is able to provide his holder enhanced resistance to low temperatures and additional parts to their suit, such as skates.
• When fed the space potion, Plagg gives his holder the ability to fly and survive in space. This is the only known superpower that shows Cat Noir eating the magic cheese and not Plagg.

Until "Re-creation", he is shown only able to fuse with Tikki to form Gimmi, unless someone activates the Ultimate Miraculous Absolute Power to grant a wish.

As seen in "Miraculous Paris", Plagg's alternate universe counterpart was able to reveal his true self at his owner's command but due to the Supreme's seal on him, was unable to fuse with Alternate Tikki into Gimmi, and any attempt will only cause pain to Plagg and to revert him back into his regular form.

Etymology[]

• Plagg's name is based on the word "plague".[24]
  • "Plagg" is also Swedish for "garment", but that is probably a coincidence.
  • "Plagg" also sounds similar to Cath Palug, a monstrous cat from Welsh folklore.

Trivia[]

• In "Ladybug & Cat Noir", he tells Adrien that he met the genie of the lamp in the past.
• Plagg was bigger in the Ladybug PV, being around the size of Félix's head.
• For Plagg, while doing the English dialogue needed for animating the show, Matthew Géczy used a British accent.

• Plagg keeps a stash of Camembert in a cupboard in Adrien's room, as seen in "Sapotis".
• Plagg does not like eating any food besides cheese. However, there are several times when he eats something that is not Camembert in order to recharge.[25]
  • In the third issue of Miraculous Adventures, he reluctantly eats a granola bar.
  • In "The Puppeteer", he appears to display an interest in "buttery popcorn".
  • In "The Dark Owl", he shares a macaron from Marinette's bakery with Tikki.
  • In "Reflekdoll", he eats a macaron Marinette gives him.
• Plagg is able to consume vast quantities of cheese in a short amount of time as compared to real cats, which are mostly lactose intolerant.
• Plagg's craving for Camembert could be based on the old wives' tale that cats love milk which they are made from.
• Plagg was known for the tilting of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the destruction of Atlantis, and the complete extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs.
  • In "Furious Fu", Su-Han also mentions that Plagg was responsible for the extinction of the dragons.
• Plagg's dislike of water is also a reference to how most wildcats and even most domestic cats hate water.
• Plagg is the third Kwami to be used for evil, though briefly, following Nooroo and Duusu. Plagg and his Miraculous were used for evil, though only in an alternate timeline, in "Cat Blanc" by Cat Noir when he was akumatized into Cat Blanc and in "Ephemeral" by Shadow Noir, who used them, with the Butterfly, Peacock and Ladybug Miraculous, to make his wish come true.
• He is one of the four Kwamis to have their Miraculous used by a Sentimonster, following Longg, Wayzz and Duusu.
• Plagg appears in every episode of the first season. In later seasons, however, he doesn't appear in "Prime Queen", "Despair Bear", "Malediktator", "Animaestro", "Christmaster", "Truth", "Furious Fu", "Guiltrip", "Crocoduel", "Qilin", "Destruction", "Determination", "Intuition", "Emotion", "The Illustrhater" and "Daddycop".
