Platinum Points are the type of coins you can earn without buying (digital) software. Not sure why they're called "platinum", since they're definitely less valuable than Gold points. They shall be known from here on as silver.
Silver points can be exchanged on My Nintendo mostly for JPEGs, PDFs, and discounts; see Rewards. There are two kinds of silver points: the generic ones are coins that feature a grey Mario mushroom emblem. App specific coins show the game they're from.
For app-related rewards, you can only use the sum of your mushroom points together with the specific app points from just that app. Furthermore, if you choose to redeem a reward from within the app, you'll only use up app points; that way you can save your generic silver for other stuff. Other kinds of rewards are redeemed from the whole of your silver points.
The app points are obtained by completing missions and tasks in the corresponding app. The mushroom points are obtained by completing online missions associated with My Nintendo. See Main Page#Daily missions and following.
Silver points will expire after six months, at the end of the sixth month. Redeeming a reward will use up the oldest points available. You can view your soon to expire points on https://my.nintendo.com/point/expiration.
