Behavior[]

Polar bears are neutral mobs unless they are around their cubs. At that point, they are hostile. Cubs themselves are passive, making polar bears the second mob to fall into all three behavior categories, along with the wolf. They spawn in cold and icy biomes, such as the tundra. Polar bears are also faster than a player when swimming. Even if a polar bear is provoked, all polar bears within a 41x21x41 block cuboid will instantly turn hostile towards the attacking player or mob (similar to zombie pigmen and wolves). Polar bears will also attack nearby foxes. Polar bears cannot breed, and the cubs' growth cannot be sped up. Like other baby animals, killing a baby polar bear yields no items or experience points.

History[]

On March 7, 2016, Jeb revealed on his Twitter that he was working on a new neutral mob with a base color code of 242 or a very light gray.[1] On April 8th, 2016, Jeb posted a link on his Twitter, stating that this was the so-called "242 Mob".[2]

Trivia[]

  • Like the other biome-specific mobs added in the Frostburn update (stray and husk), polar bears were added to Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition on December 19, 2016, with the coming of the 1.0 "Ender Update."
  • When polar bears attack, they stand up on their hind legs and hit a player with their front paws, which is similar to how bears stand up on their hind legs when threatened in real life.
  • Polar bears can serve as a source of raw fish if a player is lacking in food or has a strong sword. However, this is not recommended, as the polar bear can severely damage poorly-armored players.
  • For some reason, if a vindicator named "Johnny", or if a player spawns a vindicator with the tag {Johnny:1} or {EntityTag:{Johnny:1}}, in which it attacks a polar bear cub, nearby adult polar bears will not become hostile.
  • In snapshot 18w43c attacking a cub would cause the game to crash. It's uncertain whether this bug is patched or not.
  • Polar bear cubs will also attack nearby foxes despite acting passive to the player.
  • Although they are endangered they have a drop.
  • Polar bears are one of the mobs that can be passive, neutral, and hostile.
    • Baby polar bears are passive mobs and won’t attack the player, unless a player kills the parent.
    • Adult polar bears without cubs are not hostile.
    • Even when it gets provoked, they are still not hostile to the player.
