Sorry I've probably phrased it badly. What I mean is that across my device and another, we both have read receipts turned off, yet we can still read when the other has read our message, if that makes sense? So I was wondering why that happens when it's off? Yet it doesn't happen with everyone on my contacts

In iMessage, if Read receipts is turned off, the only thing the person you are having a conversation with should see is "Delivered". You will only see "Read" on messages you send if the receiver has read receipts turned on. If you have it turned off, the people that send you messages should not see "Read".

Yeah, that's why I'm confused that it happens, because between me and a few others, we have read receipts turned off but we can still read when the other has read our messages and they can read when they send it to me

I'm a little confused on what you are stating here. You are stating that between you and a few others. Read receipts is either on or off. You cannot turn it on/off for selected users. Also, this only works in iMessage, not SMS with non-iOS devices. What troubleshooting have you tried?

With it turned off, you should not see Read when someone reads your message, that part is correct. Why it is happening is interesting, that is why I asked what troubleshooting you have tried.

As far as the statement about it not happening with all contacts, again read receipts would only work with contacts that are using iOS devices. Read receipts will not work with non-iOS recipients. One other question, do you have multiple iOS devices using iMessage, such as an iPhone and iPad, or a Mac computer using iMessage? Each device can be set separately. I see this with my iPhone and iPad.

I haven't tried any troubleshooting since I do like that it does it, for whatever reason it does. I'm mainly wondering why it happens so that, since I'm hoping to upgrade my phone, my new one will do the same thing!

I have a Mac computer but I don't tend to use iMessage on there - does that make a difference?

I'm not familiar with using a Mac for iMessage, as I am a Windows user. I just know that with an iPad and iPhone, I can set Read Receipts on/off for each device differently. I just tested that this morning. I'm not sure what the result would be, as I've not got anyone that I can test a message with right now. But, I am curious what a reset would do. That has no affect on your data, just hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and the device reboots. If that does not change it, it is possible that something has corrupted the setting, and a restore of the device could change it. I won't recommend that right now, as that requires you to either restore to a current backup, or restore to factory and then you lose all content. People tend to not enjoy doing that for something minor, but that is up to you.
