My idea is very simple, remove the annoying nether fog. Why remove the nether fog? 1) It limit the view distance 2) It makes ghast much harder to spot 3)The nether looks very epic without fog, look at this example. 4) It is useless game decoration Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

    Nothing to see here~

What's Nether fog? I've been with this game for 2 years and I've never heard of anything like that, and I saw no mention of it on the wiki. What are you talking about? (I'm probably going to look like an idiot very soon) Last edited by Charlito153: Aug 31, 2014 Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

While it might look epic without the fog, I am pretty sure it was implemented to help reduce lag in the nether. With all the light sources, animated textures, and unusual mobs spawning, there has to be more than a little bit of lag. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

Actually, they need to put this in as an optional thing. It is true, the Nether looks much better without that pesky fog. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

Figured it was time for a change.

The fog is good. I mean, if you find it so annoying, why not just make your distance view longer? I mean, for people like me, who don't have the best computers, this will be extremely laggy. I mean, if they don't have the fog, then the distance you view will still be the same, except in stead of it being smooth with fog, the chunks will just stop, you wouldn't see any of the blocks beyond them, and it would just look horrible. Actually, fog has no effect on reducing lag - the game still renders what is behind the fog, which is just a visual overlay. In fact, Optifine says fog hurts performance (as seen when you mouse over the fog setting; "no fog = fastest, fast fog = slower, fancy fog = slowest"), although it makes no difference to me. What the OP is referring to is the way fog is closer to the player in the Nether; the game actually limits the maximum fog distance in the Nether, in a similar manner to the now-removed void fog. Here's the code (1.7.10) that controls Nether fog: if (this.mc.theWorld.provider.doesXZShowFog((int)var3.posX, (int)var3.posZ)) { GL11.glFogf(GL11.GL_FOG_START, var6 * 0.05F); GL11.glFogf(GL11.GL_FOG_END, Math.min(var6, 192.0F) * 0.5F); } "var6" is set to the render distance in blocks but when it is larger than 192 blocks it makes no difference because it takes the minimum of that and 192, then multiplies it by 0.5, meaning the fog end distance (peak fog density) is only 96 blocks (6 chunks), and fog starts at most 12.8 blocks from the player (on 16 chunk render distance; 256 * 0.05). This has no effect whatsover on chunk loading though and the game still renders whatever is behind the fog, a common misconception. Having said that, the fog is supposed to make it spookier and more dangerous; removing void fog is one thing (not really going to have much effect especially since it only gets very close near bedrock and you can't see very far in most caves, where it is less dense, anyway) but Nether fog has a bigger impact on gameplay. TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download. TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4. Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

I would be okay with removing this. After all, void fog is being removed. My main issue with void fog is it only shows up on the center of the screen. If you look at a part of the Nether then turn a little to the left or right you will be able to see more when the point you were looking at is on the left or right edge of the window. That has always annoyed me. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

But, that makes the nether spooky and stuff. I wouldn't like to see it removed, the nether isn't a place where I spend most of my time anyways. I'm not going to sit and look at it, I try to get in and out as fast as possible. No support Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

This happens because your computer doesn't support what Optifine calls "fancy" fog (fog appears curved instead of linear); for me fog stays consistent regardless of which direction I am looking at, as demonstrated here: "Fast" fog: "Fancy" fog (if your GPU supports it): For the first case I'd rather not have any fog at all because of the way it looks, so an option to disable fog globally could be added, but I don't think there should be a switch just for Nether fog. We're kind of getting off topic at this point but is fancy fog an optifine only feature? I have never needed optifine so I don't use it. I would be fine with a global fog option, or a fog option for each in the graphics settings. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

It is graphic card dependent; the "fancy" fog is the default in vanilla if your GPU supports it, otherwise it uses the "fast" fog; I used Optifine to show the difference between them and why some people see fog change depending on where they are looking. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

The Nether looks so much better without the stupid fog. When I started playing beta again I found the Nether much more awesome looking when there is no fog to blanket the epic landscape. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

But for people who have a lower viewing distance, it would look dumb. In stead of fog to cover it up, the world would just end, until you got close enough to render it. That would look even worse. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

No support. The nether is literally Minecraft's hell, not somewhere you go sightseeing. The point is to limit the view distance, ghasts are not that hard to locate and/or kill, and again, you're not supposed to be there sitting on a cliff admiring the views. Plus it makes the nether feel distinctly creepier than the overworld. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack A man who dares to waste an hour of his life has not yet discovered the value of time. The reason why you see at an angle, but not straight on is because everything is rendered in a giant box shape instead of a sphere (it is minecraft afterall). I do agree it is annoying and like you I wouldn't mind seeing this go or at least change the rendering from a box shape to a larger sphere, so it makes more sense.
