Karen Carpenter’s Death – Reason
Karen Carpenter was born on March 2, 1950.
Together with her brother, she launched their band in 1965, and fame wasn’t far behind.
With all the attention and success, Karen became very self-conscious about her weight.
She started dieting in high school and later tried the Stillman diet during her teen years, which dropped her weight to just 120 pounds.
By 1975, at the peak of her career, Karen weighed only 41 kgs—even for someone who stood 5 feet 4 inches, that was far too light.
After marrying Thomas James Burris, Karen eventually turned to her brother for help and began treatment for anorexia.
She also resorted to laxatives and thyroid medications to shed more pounds.
Even though she had a brief recovery after collapsing in 1982 and receiving an IV drip in the hospital, her health never really bounced back.
Tragically, on February 1, 1983, Karen was found dead in her bedroom.
She was rushed to Downey Community Hospital, but it was too late. She was nearly 33 years old.
Autopsy reports later revealed that a mix of drug or medication overdose and blood sugar levels ten times above normal were the culprits behind her death.

Richard After Karen’s Death
A few years following Karen’s passing, Richard pressed on with his music career.
In 1986, he released his first solo LP, titled Time.
Since then, he’s put out a number of singles, including “Something in Your Eyes,” “Karen’s Theme,” and “Medley.”
Even today, Richard and his children continue to perform at various Carpenter-related shows.
Richard and his wife Mary now live in their California home.
Richard Carpenter Has Health Issues
In the 1970s, Carpenter went through a tough time with a Quaalude addiction, he originally started taking the sedative to help with insomnia, but things quickly got out of hand.
Along with the addiction, he dealt with bouts of depression and even some panic attacks, which led to noticeable weight loss as his eating habits fell apart.
By 1979, he decided enough was enough and checked himself into a rehab center, where he managed to get clean.
Around the same period, his sister Karen was fighting her own battle with anorexia nervosa.
Even though her family and friends tried to help, her condition only worsened over time.
By 1982, she had dropped to under 80 pounds, and sadly, Karen lost her fight with the illness in February 1983.
This loss hit Carpenter hard, both personally and in his professional life.
Even after all that, health issues seem to have popped up again for Carpenter.
He was all set to perform at The Anvil in the United Kingdom on Friday, September 20, 2024 as part of his tour.
However, a notice on The Anvil’s website announced that Richard cancelled his UK tour due to ongoing health concerns.
Richard Carpenter Net Worth
Carpenter’s success in his career has really helped him build a solid financial base, people say his net worth is around $14 million.
By comparison, his late sister Karen had an estimated net worth of $6 million when she passed away back in 1983.
Back in 1994, Carpenter and his wife decided to dive into real estate.
They bought a piece of land in Thousand Oaks, California, for roughly $600,000, and on that land they built a sprawling 10,000–square–foot home with six bedrooms, finishing up in 2000.
Nowadays, that house is valued somewhere between $6 and $8 million.
