Recipe Highlights

  • Salty & Sweet. The salty and sweet combination of salted caramel is delicious!
  • It’s an inexpensive Starbucks copycat. It adds up buying Starbucks every day, but you can make this copycat recipe at home for a fraction of the price.
  • Creamer & Sweetener. When added to cold brew coffee, some of the cold foam seeps into the drink, while the foamier part sits on top. This sweetens the drink and adds creaminess.

What is Cold Foam?

Cold foam is a topping made of cream and milk that Starbucks uses to make a variety of drinks.

But it’s really easy to make cold foam at home!

There are a bunch of different cold foam flavors to try besides this salted caramel one, such as this pumpkin cold foam.

What Goes Well With Salted Caramel Cold Foam?

This salted caramel cold foam goes well with lots of iced drinks.

You can add it to any type of basic cold brew coffee. It will add both creaminess and sweetness, replacing the sugar or milk that you would normally add.

For fancier drinks, try adding it on top of this iced white chocolate mocha or this iced chocolate mocha.

It would also go perfectly with this caramel iced coffee, or an iced version of this salted caramel mocha or this caramel cappuccino.

Ingredients & Substitutions

Ingredients needed to make the cold foam.
  • Caramel Sauce: Use whatever type of caramel sauce you can find. It should have a semi-liquid so that it can mix easily into the milk.
  • Sea Salt: Use sea salt rather than regular table salt. This will make the best salted caramel flavor.
  • Milk: Most of the cold foam is made with milk. Use 2% or 3% milk.
  • Cream: Use heavy whipping cream for the best results. A little bit of cream makes a richer cold foam.

Equipment

  • An electric frother to froth the cold foam.
  • Alternatively, you can use a handheld frother or a french press.

Instructions

Step 1: Heat the caramel sauce in the microwave for 5 to 10 seconds until it is smooth and liquidy. Don’t overheat the sauce or let it burn.

Step 2: Add the sea salt to the caramel sauce, stirring to evenly distribute it.

Step 3: Add the caramel sauce into the mix and cream. Use a spoon to mix them together.

Step 4: Froth the mixture in an electric frother on the “Cold Froth” setting.

How To Make Cold Foam Without A Frother

When making cold foam, an electric frother is going to give the best results. However, there are a few alternatives if you don’t have one:

  • Handheld Frother: Cheaper than an electric frother, a handheld electric frother can give almost the same results as an standard electric frother.
  • French Press: Add the ingredients to a French press and move the handle up and down quickly until the mixture has doubled in volume.
  • Mason Jar: Add the ingredients to a mason jar and shake vigorously. This will not create the same quality cold foam, but is better than nothing as a last resort.

Storage

Salted caramel cold foam is best used immediately. It only takes a few minutes to make, and the extra foaminess of fresh cold foam is worth the few minutes of preparation.

However, you can store leftover cold foam in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a couple of days.

It will still taste good, but it will decrease in foaminess. You may need to partially re-froth the mixture right before using it to add in more volume.

Expert Tips

  • Use fresh milk. Fresh milk froths much better than milk that has been sitting in the fridge for a few days.
  • Clean your milk frother well. Whenever you use flavoring in your electric frother, always make sure to clean it thoroughly immediately after use.
  • Adjust the salt. Add more or less salt to the caramel sauce, depending on your preference.
  • Adjust the cream. If you want an extra creamy cold foam, replace some of the milk with cream.

FAQ

Can I use caramel syrup instead of caramel sauce?

Yes, you can use a salted caramel drink syrup instead, but the flavor may be slightly more artificial.

Can I use oat milk or almond milk instead?

Non-dairy milk will not froth as well as cow’s milk. If you do try this recipe with vegan milk, choose a “barista” oat or almond milk.
