Member Oct 30, 2018 4,799 I played the demo for Monstrum Nox(IX) and really liked it, i was wondering VIII is worth playing before IX, i understand they are self contained stories which seems to be a trademark of the series, still, i wonder if Ys VIII is worth the shot. Just for the record, i do not plan on playing any installment prior to VIII, i have very limited time as it is. Thx in advance.PlanetSmasher

Member Oct 25, 2017 142,319 I don't think it's really necessary, almost none of the Ys games lead directly into each other. Also if you play Lacrimosa you will probably be too burned out on the format to play Monstrum Nox after it. They're VERY SIMILAR games. Pick one or the other.Stairmaster_
Member Jan 27, 2019 306 I love Ys VIII, if you feel like playing it I'd highly recommend itNelthar
Member Jan 14, 2020 193 I would say you should, because Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana is one of best games i played, and better than Ys IX (it was still great, but not as amazing as Lacrimosa).Chaosblade

Member Oct 25, 2017 7,239 Ys VIII is generally well regarded and is considered a high mark of the series by most fans. I haven't paid enough attention to see whether there is a consensus on VIII or IX being better, but early on it seemed like more people preferred VIII. So it's probably worth playing. I personally did not like VIII and am not going to buy IX. (But the games before VIII are the good ones, and you could play both Oath in Felghana and Origin in half the time it would take to play through the bloated mess that is Ys VIII) Last edited: Jan 29, 2022Mauricio_Magus

Member Oct 25, 2017 24,006 VIII is better than IX, so it depends on if you think you'll want to play both.EarlGreyHot
Member Oct 27, 2017 4,487 It doesn't matter they're both good and the story is self contained in both games. Personally I prefer IX.Mivey
Member Oct 25, 2017 22,090 Personally really liked Ys VIII, the best "party Ys" game so far for me. The absolute highlight of the series for me is Ys Origin, and I generally liked the Solo Adol games even more. I haven't played Ys IX yet, but I did play the demo (and really enjoyed it), so I would recommend that you if you plan on playing IX anyway, you also check out VIII. As for the story, the YS games are pretty simple in that regard. There's Adol, he travels around the world ( a fictional world, inspired by Europe during antiquity), and on each of his adventures he encounters strange and mystical things, often leading to him saving the world and/or local village. While the games reference each other, with returning characters and allusions to things that happened in prior games, I don't think you'll have any trouble at all if you play them in whatever order you like. It's really not like a story centric series like Trails.vic viper
Member Dec 27, 2017 544 How long of a game do you want? I love both 8 and 9 quite a bit, but prefer 9s significantly shorter length. OP OPGraven

Click to shrink...Didn't consider the lenght, but i could say i wanted the one with the most interesting story and characters, and overall less filler or padding.

Click to expand... Click to shrink...This is exactly why I didn't like Ys VIII. That game is loaded with filler and padding. Old Ys games were like 10-15 hours tops, brisk adventures that were all killer no filler. VIII is like 45 hours, the gameplay didn't carry it that long for me, and I didn't care enough about the story to stick with it for that.

Member Jul 26, 2018 5,526 Ys VIII has a ton of filler and the characters are tropey, story is nonsense. Stay far away OP OPGraven
Member Oct 30, 2018 4,799 Thx for the answers everyone, it appears that IX might be the best option for me, since the core gameplay is the same. If i end up liking more than anticipated, perharps i might visit VIII at some point.FallenGrace
Member Oct 27, 2017 6,400 They are both great and can be played in either order. IX has a couple of Easter eggs from VIII is about all. Not sure what platform op but PC or PS4/5 are optimal.
