Hey ladies! The doc at L&D this week was telling me about silent labour. I know as FTM we are waiting for those big painful cramps and contractions. But some women can get to almost pushing without feeling pain. She said it's called silent labour. It's not something I ever heard of so I thought I would share. The norm is to go get checked if you can't talk through a contraction or if it's very painful. But if you are getting contractions at less than 5 mins apart that are getting longer (lasting more than a minute) and for more than two hours. Even if there is NO pain and NO cramps go to L&D in the event that you are having a silent labour. I hope I'm one of the lucky ones who get to have silent labour. It's not rare but not common either but I just wanted to give you a heads up that you don't need to be in pain to go! Funny ....my OB just told me this morning that there is 0% chance you won't know you're in labor as a FTM. She said anyone who has the baby without knowing they were in labor is in denial. Not to say your doc is wrong.... just don't want to scare anyone thinking they won't know they are in labor. If your contractions are that close together go to the hospital. I was induced at 37 weeks with no epidural and felt 0 contractions. I felt no pain and then at once it felt like I was holding my baby in. I asked my sister in law (who is a nurse) how to know if I need to push and her response was “they say you just know” I asked her to grab a nurse to come check my cervix. There is a picture of me eating ice in the hospital bed at 11:05 prior to the conversation with my sister in law, and the first picture of my daughter was at 11:10. Silent labor is real mamas. This is definitely possible, because it happened to me with my first and second baby, I didn't feel my contractions & only reason I ended up in delivery room was because they were suppose to check my fluid on a sat morning & with my second I got a contraction that was so long and felt was so weird and went and I was ready to push my daughter....

With my first was told that I would know for sure too. I had constant back pain for a couple hours and that's why I went in. It wasn't unbearable pain, just unusual and persistent. My doc happened to be on call so she said just come in to get checked, worst they would do is send me home. Hooked me up and monitored contractions and they would tell me "you are having a contraction now" and I still couldn't feel it. To this day don't know what a contraction feels like. (I had en epidural once I progressed so covered up any stronger ones I may have actually felt).

Yeah!!! My doc felt a very intense contraction and I couldn't even feel it!! So I'm certain it's possible!! My mom said she only had slight back pain with me and didn't actually feel her contractions or cramps until late labour ! I hope I stay this way till 6cm!! So my doctor didn't necessarily call it silent labor but she did say that if I'm having contractions that last for a minute, every 5 (or less) minutes and this goes on for two hours OR contractions that are so painful that you can't talk through them but she didn't act like it needed to be both! Actually it's possible. My friend who didn't know she was even pregnant started bleeding so much out of no where and all of a sudden in pain, went to the er and found out baby's head was in the birth canal. This happened to my grandmother with her first 3 (2 of which resulted in home births) and then also to one of my aunts. Neither of them knew they were in labour until almost time to push - or in their cases have the babies practically slide out. No pains, no dramatic water breaking, nothing but some pressure... really hoping for a birth experience like this!! Like
