Want to use GIFs on your PowerPoint presentation? Similar to adding other types of images, you can easily insert animated GIFs from your computer or from the web. Keep in mind you can only add and view GIFs in PowerPoint on a computer; this won't work in the PowerPoint mobile app. Here's how to insert GIFs into PowerPoint using your Windows or Mac computer.
Adding a GIF to a PowerPoint Slide
To insert GIFs into PowerPoint, click the Insert tab and click Pictures. Click This Device to browse your computer. Select the GIF, and then click Insert.
Steps
Section 1 of 2:Inserting a GIF
-
1 Move your cursor to the location you want to add the GIF. First, select the slide you want to insert the GIF to from the slide panel on the left side of your screen. Then, move your cursor over to the location on the slide where you want your GIF to appear. - The GIF you insert into your PowerPoint cannot be played on the mobile app or mobile web browser on Android or iOS. You will only see the animation when viewing the presentation on a computer.
-
2 Click the Insert tab. You’ll find this in the ribbon above your slide or in the ribbon along the top of your screen.[1] - If you're using a Mac, stay on the Home tab.
-
3 Click Pictures. You can find this in the Images section. - A drop-down menu will open.
-
4 Select This Device. Choose this option if the GIF you want to insert is saved to on your computer. If you'd rather select a GIF from Microsoft's gallery, click Stock Images. For an even wider selection of GIFs on the web, click Online Pictures. - On Mac, this will look like Picture from File.
-
5 Select the GIF and click Insert. Use the pop-up window to find and select the GIF saved on your device. You can also add other images. - If you selected Stock Images, click the Videos tab, and then enter keywords to find a GIF.
- If you selected Online Pictures, type "GIF" + keywords to search for the right GIF.
- Once the GIF is inserted, it will play live on your slide. Be sure to save your presentation so you don't lose your changes.
-
6 Move the GIF (optional). If you need to place the GIF in a different part of the slide, click and drag it to the proper position. - To resize the GIF, click one of the corner circles and drag it inwards to make it smaller or outward to make it bigger.
- To pause the GIF, click the pause button in the bottom-left corner.

Troubleshooting GIFs in PowerPoint
-
1 Delete the GIF and add it again. If the GIF isn't playing properly on the slide, you may just remove it and add it again. Select the file, then press the Delete or Del key on your keyboard. Then, use the Pictures button to insert the GIF once more. -
2 Use a different GIF. If you're uploading a GIF from your device or using a link from another website, the GIF may be corrupted or too large to play properly during your presentation. In this case, you can look for a similar or smaller version of your GIF for your presentation. -
3 Check your animation settings in PowerPoint. If animation is disabled, any GIFs you've inserted will not animate properly on the slide. To see if animations are disabled, and to reenable them if necessary, do the following: - Click the Slide Show tab at the top of PowerPoint.
- Click Set Up Slide Show.
- If Show without animation is checked, click the box to remove the checkmark.
- Click OK to save your changes.
-
4 Update PowerPoint. If you're running an older version of PowerPoint, you may have trouble playing certain GIFs. To check for PowerPoint updates, do the following: - Click the File menu.
- Click Account.
- Click Update Options.
- Click Update Now.
