Single Review: Labrinth – 'Jealous' - Renowned For Sound

English singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer Labrinth has been quaking the charts since the release of his smash hit single Earthquake in late 2011 and his debut album Electronic Earth in 2012; now Labrinth is returning with his sophomore effort Take Me to the Truth, and we already had a taste previously with the soulful lead single Let It Be, andnow we have been introduced to the album’s second single Jealous.

Previously we have known Labrinth for his knack of the electronic/dance genre to impress the masses, but his ballads are really touching as well, keeping Beneath Your Beautiful in mind; Jealous is a beautiful and heart wrenching piano ballad, and if you watch its accompanying music video all the emotions are expressed without fault and viewing it enhances your listening experience. Your first impression of the lyrics are that he’s broken up with somebody, but it’s actually written to one of Labrinth’s parents who left when he was very young. “I’m jealous of the rain, it falls upon your skin, it’s closer than my hands have been…”, the opening phrase shows and example of the emotive imagery written.

Jealous was written and performed in a way that the listener can emotionally connect with it, Labrinth did mention that it’s written so everybody could relate with their own experience; listening to his voice you can feel and understand his pain, and that’s important with a ballad of this nature, it’s not convincing when artists don’t try to nail the right emotion for a particular song. Labrinth is an artist who knows exactly what he’s capable of, and one of the many things he can do is deliver a solid track, and he’s done just that with Jealous.
