Wayne Rooney has opened up on his infamous transfer request at Manchester United that resulted in him being sent out of Sir Alex Ferguson's office.

The former England star asked to leave Old Trafford in 2010 which turned out to be one of the biggest transfer sagas the world of football has seen in the last decade or so.

Rooney insists he was worried about the direction the club were going in after the departures of Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Derby County boss went to Ferguson's office to express his concerns to the manager, but the Scot sent him packing.

Rooney would later hand in a transfer request as he looked to force a move away from United, but the club were determined to keep him.

He would end up staying put as he signed a new contract amid claims it was a ploy to get a new deal and an improved salary.

Opening about the situation in his new Amazon Prime documentary 'Rooney' he said: "We'd sold Tevez, then we'd sold Ronaldo, so I was the one player left who was high profile.

"I went into Alex Ferguson's office and I said to him 'what's the plan here?'

"At the minute we've brought two young English players in who are unproven, and I remember Alex Ferguson's response was 'Get out my office!"

Rooney disputes that his motive was money as claims he put off penning a new deal because silverware was more important.

He added: "They [United] were offering me a contract of five years on £200,000 a week, so it would have been quite easy to say 'let me sign it now!'

"But I wanted success on the pitch because that means more to me."

Gary Neville admits Rooney let his teammates down as he revealed the news hit the Man United dressing room "like a ton of bricks."

The former Red Devils full-back said: "The one big disappointment I had with Wayne was when he announced [he wanted to leave] publicly, just as we were walking into the changing room.

"His teammates were playing a game. Don't do that to us. Take your s*** somewhere else.

"It's on Sky Sports News, beamed into us. It literally hit us like a ton of bricks, because this wasn't him. He could never damage his teammates, he was a team player.

"That was the only time that I've ever thought he let himself down."

Rooney is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video from Friday 11th February.
