Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has explained the reason why he had to leave the club.

After 13 years at Old Trafford the 31-year-old returned to his boyhood club on a free transfer and was officially unveiled at a press conference with Toffees boss Ronald Koeman.

Rooney endured a frustrating final season at Old Trafford starting just 10 Premier League games and explained that is why he had to leave.

Asked if it had gone 'stale' at United Rooney replied: "It hadn’t gone stale, I enjoyed my time there but I needed to play more games and I didn’t play that often last season.

Rooney had been linked with a move to a number of other clubs including a mega-money move to China.

But the England forward explained that a return to Everton was the only option.

"Of course there were other options there but once I knew Ronald Koeman wanted to bring me back to the club I knew that was the only place I was going to be playing my football," he added.

Rooney had to make do with a place on the bench for the majority of the season and he said how he dealt with that.

He explained: "It’s frustrating. My whole career I’ve played and it’s the first time I haven’t played and I was on the bench. And that’s not me, I want to play football.

"When I wasn’t playing it was frustrating. But I was the captain of Manchester United and you need to keep yourself positive around the place and try and make sure you’re not bringing a negativity to the dressing room.

"It was tough but that’s football."
