Skyrim: How To Hire A Steward - Game Rant

Skyrim gives players a huge number of ways to roleplay and build a sense of immersion for themselves in the frozen northern lands of Tamriel. One of the many ways to make the world of Skyrim feel more real is to buy a homestead and build it over the course of a playthrough. Proper maintenance of the home and surrounding land can be hard when adventuring, though.

That's where Stewards come in. Jarl Balgruuf of Whiterun has Proventus Avenicci as his steward, but the role of the Dragonborn's steward is very different. Far from an advisor or strategist, a steward helps take care of the homestead by offering home improvements, ordering supplies, placing furniture, and otherwise maintaining things when the player is out killing Dragons.

There are three main things a steward can do in Skyrim – they can build rooms without the need for supplies, they can order shipments of supplies, and they offer special buildings and options that can only be purchased from them. After being hired, stewards can build homestead improvements for a flat gold cost.

  • Enchanting Tower: 2,500 Gold
  • Alchemy Lab: 2,500 Gold
  • Bedrooms: 2,000 Gold

  • Library: 1,500 Gold

They can also arrange to have specific supplies delivered to the Carpenter's Workbench, if players would rather make these improvements themself. These cost a flat gold amount too, and arrive after a short time in-game.

  • Clay: 20 Bricks for 20 Gold
  • Quarried Stone: 20 Stone for 100 Gold
  • Sawn Logs: 20 Logs for 200 Gold

Last, they offer a select few services that can only be added by stewards. These include three farm animals as well as the ability to hire a Bard or build a permanent Carriage on-site.

  • Hire Bard: 1,500 Gold. Plays music on the homestead.
  • Hire Carriage: 500 Gold. Takes players to major cities, like a normal Carriage, as well as a number of minor cities not normally reachable by Carriage.
  • Horse: 1,000 Gold. Mount. Requires a Stable to be built.
  • Cow: 200 Gold. Spawns Milk Jugs on the property. Requires Animal Pen to be built.
  • Chicken: 25 Gold. Spawns Eggs on the property. Requires Animal Pen to be built.

How To Hire A Steward In Skyrim

Skyrim Steward NPC
Skyrim Stewards

Stewards are not a special class of follower in Skyrim, despite having access to a variety of unique abilities compared to normal followers. To hire a steward, go through the same process you would to hire a follower. Bring your chosen follower to the Homestead and speak with them while on the property to see if they are suitable for stewardship.

If the option to ask them to become a steward becomes available, congratulations, you're done! If it doesn't show up, though, the follower you chose is unable to become a steward. Fire this follower, and find another one until one agrees to become your steward. This interaction must be done on the property, as the dialogue option will not show up elsewhere.
